BE WITH THE LOCALS

Be with the locals - Introduction
By The Editor

For years in conversations with foreign tourists, I have often heard many of them say that what they really want is "to be with the locals", and to get to know those places where the locals go and to practice or enjoy some of those activities that the locals practice.

Remembering my trips, I put myself in their place and definitely I agree with the famous phrase that says: "if you go to Rome, do as the Romans do". There is no better way to get to know the essence of a place you visit, than to mix and mingle with the local people.

There is no better way than, whenever possible, to practice some of the activities that the locals practice in order to have fun, eat, educate themselves and much more. It is through this sharing and living together that we truly connect with each other and even though there might be an apparent separation caused by the language, in those moments we can observe that we do no have to create an oneness - it is already there! The only thing we have to do - if we want to - is find it.

Being with the locals awakens conscience both in the visitor and in the host. This is really exciting and above all this is revealing our cultures. And even though a lot is said about that it is culture that separates and differentiates between nations, I prefer to think and believe what Anthony de Mello suggests in his book of self-liberation, "we have the privilege to choose that culture is the one that joins us."

In order to discover whether this can be or not, those of us who are willing can do the first step, which is "to be with the locals".

Starting with this edition we create the column "To be with the locals", our purpose being simply to share our essence, and even though it might turn out to be difficult to believe at certain moments, through reading and observation of our activities, beliefs, experiences, costumes and more. we wake up to the reality that since the beginning until our end we are all one big family.

Now I invite you to click here and to start being with the locals.
