In my office, close to my sight, I have a poster of a Boren paint, which
represents The Quiosco of Vallarta, as well all what happens around of
it. Watching it with attention, without any move I can transport my self
and recall all the times since I came to this city, that the Quiosco has
been a witness of personal events.
Yet, I haven't found detail information about the history of the Quiosco
it self in Mexico, however, in my personal experience and on the basis
of my observation, can share that since it first appearance the Quiosco
is a relevant social symbol in common life of our villages and people.
In a Mexican village around a Quiosco, between other thinghs, people reunite
to talk, negotiate, listen music, see some dances, take pictures, manifest
disagreements, waxing shoes, relax, buy some candy or balloons, take children
to play, walk a baby on his stroller, dance, watch people, eat a ice cream,
feed the birds, wait for the girlfriend, celebrate, organize kermeses and
exhibitions, give announces, make new friends, have romantic encounters
and much, much more. All that occur around a Quiosco has a repercussion
in society. In fact, the majority of the principal historic events of a
village, occur around it's own Quiosco.
A Quiosco can be found just like a center of a
little esplanade, like a central area of a park, a public or private
garden. Always a Quiosco has to be the center of a "Plaza de Armas" (Square or Armament), this square
almost all the time is in front of a building or Government Palace. In
Puerto Vallarta, the Quiosco has a strategic location in the center of
the "Plaza de Armas" that is located just in the middle of the city and
where it is located too in honor of the lawyer Ignacio Luis Vallarta a
statuet of bronze. The Quiosco is surround by jardinières and rest
benches. To the north is adjacent to the building of the Municipal Government,
to the east a one block distance of the "Virgen de Guadalupe" 's temple,
to the west is protected by the "malecón" which is neighbor of the
Bandera´s Bay sea, offering a nice panoramic view of the open air
theater where the arches are located.
Our rod iron Quiosco substituted the original
made of cement and bricks. It was placed in its current site in 1969,
being part of a remodel project lead by the engineer Uribe Valencia and
accomplished by the initiative of the Urban Improvement Board, being
the Mayor at that time Mr. José Vázquez
Galván.
The Quiosco is a public space and in order to
it is the ideal enclosing frame to, between other topics, several artists
offered their artistic manifestations to the people of the village. Like
a part of a permanent cultural program, every thursday and sunday from
6.00 pm to 7:00 pm, the Municipal Band perform in the Quiosco, playing
music to delight the local people and visitors. To the lovers of dance
every sunday from 7:00 pm to 9:30 pm it offers music of danzón".
To all foreign visitors, this is an excellent opportunity to appreciate
another popular manifestation in where can be known more of our customs,
tastes, and traditions.
In their Quiosco, Puerto Vallarta shows another mosaic of it's life fulfill
of color enriched with the voices and curious sights of their people, like
always, without hoping a compensation, they are able to share and devote
a little piece of their beings to everyone who wants to take it forever
in his mind. The Editor
