From My Balcony

The value of unity
By Nacho Cadena Owner of La Petite France

I have, clearly in my memory, in front of me, that illustration divided into three pictures:

Picture number one: 2 small donkeys, rather 2 mules, united with each other by a piece of rope and at the end 2 piles of fodder, the mules pulling in opposite direction and since the rope is not long enough, none of the 2 reaches the pile of fodder. Picture number 2: the 2 mules, instead of struggling each one on its side and suffering / putting up with hunger, are moving together to the pile of fodder on the left side and in a friendly and civilized way they eat it and enjoy it. Picture number 3: the 2 mules tied together by the neck, are moving together to the right side and gobble the other pile of fodder. Both of them happy, both of them satisfied, both of them nourished and both of them pleased. The moral is very simple: very simple but sometimes only a bit accepted. We human beings, the intelligent beings, the rational beings, the ones who think, do not come to an agreement and we suffer the consequences of not yielding, of not negotiating, or simply of not having the courage to accept and face the truths of others.

Sometimes the weapon of humans, as exclusive owners amongst beings with intelligence and reason, we continue with that old order: "divide and you will win". And in order to preserve these sterile fights we do not evolve, harming ourselves and everyone and we continue to divide in order to win a never ending battle.

I just visited a city that was in crisis, in a big economic and therefore social depression. Today, some years later, thanks to the sense of unity amongst its citizens, it is a booming city, in complete growth, living within order and a huge cordiality. Unity was stronger, it could outdo the crisis. Today political parties come and go, and the wealth of the city continues. They modified the main source of wealth and with everyone's collaboration, with a common project, they have planned their future, advising against risks, avoiding limits, taking advantage of opportunities and setting goals, high but achievable goals.

THE MULES AND THE FODDER

There is in all the offices I visited in that city, in that of the Mayor, in that of Coparmex, in that of CANACO, in that of the Association of industrialists, the association of agriculture and ranchers, in that of the CANIRAC, in the head office of the CTM, and even in that of the Hotel and Motel Association, in all of them, next to the photo of the president of the republic there is the well framed huge drawing, which I described at the beginning, the one with the 2 mules tied together by their neck. It seems as if they want to keep a reminder of the message of all that can be achieved when 2 people reach an agreement. Someone gave me a copy as a gift and immediately I hung it up in the small library of my house. I took down a pretty photo of the boardwalk and the church tower and put up the drawing of the 2 mules.

Tired from my trip I went into my bedroom, switched off the light and laid down to sleep an inescapable prelude to philosophize in the morning.

That was all for today, thank you very much.
