From My Balcony

My dear friends
By Nacho Cadena Owner of La Petite France

The year 2004 is over. I always liked the harmony formed by this number, one two, two zeros and one four, it has something tender, soft, agreeable and graceful. After 12 months reality sometimes turns out to be more graceless than graceful. Some earthquakes and cracks sent by HIM to measure us and put us to a test. Ultimately, counting the damages and the rewards, we emerge as winners and therefore we should start the New Year by giving thanks.

We are alive and we should not complain, we are fine. during 365 days we woke up, we were breathing at dawn, our heart was beating, making us fall in love with all the things surrounding us and with all the people being close to us, fretting about achieving more, passionate about everything we like, patient with anything we do not like, intelligent to know the difference between duty and job, humble in accepting that I cannot do everything, generous in sharing what I have, simple in learning from the rest, skeptical in searching for truth, imaginative in renewing us daily, imaginative in achieving the impossible, calm in not making groundless judgments, observant in capturing the beauty in everything that is beautiful.

Or did you not have a great time this year? Many things happened that did not have a huge impact on anyone, but it is always the small and ordinary things filling the soul with happiness: we took a long or short trip but we took one, we gained a few pounds but we ate deliciously, those great warm water showers, those shoes we put a new sole on and they are as good as new, the caresses of the woman or the man we love, the smile of a son, a brother or a grandson, the salty taste of a tear, orange juice, the pupil of his eyes, drinking a good tequila, the coquetry of a handsome man or woman, the handshake of a friend, the last novel of Jose Agustin, reunions with friends and breakfasts without benefits, a good meat taco, another book form Garcia Marquez, a love song, the silhouette of a palm tree, the piñata stick, the thousand shades of mountain greens, the blow of the breeze, the smell of iodine, the yellow color of the flowers, the mating of the whales, the crabs on the beach, the smooth stones in the rivers, the intense blue of the sky, the figures of the clouds, the sunsets' green spot, chocolate ice-cream, the eclipse of the moon, the victory of the Pumas soccer team, shooting stars, trips to Yelapa, the sounds of nature, the wind, the daily sun, friends, fighting for just causes, concerts, events of the CUC, rain, thunder, lightning, the delay of planes, devout church women, fruits in the markets, smells, the heat, the joy of Mondays, women, the fashion of the navel, strong men,... so many good things that you and I, male and female, men and women, all of us had the grace to enjoy this year 2004.

Sure there also was sadness, setbacks, and sufferings. God likes to play games and pieces of mischief and he likes to know who we are, what kind of clay we are made of, how we react, he likes to test us.. He makes us ill and then he heals us, he sends us lack and then abundance, grief and afterwards joy, failure and success, he takes something material away and fills our soul with spiritual wealth, he makes us cry and he gives us motives to smile and to roar with laughter.

God is good, so good that he created the Universe and Life in seven days, and with it he created ants and dragonflies, rhinoceros and crocodiles, corals and clams, crotos and nopal cactus, rose bushes and flamboyanes, oceans and mountains, black and white, shallowness and profoundness, round and square, man and woman, you and me.

God is good and he taught us how to love and say I love you, he taught us how to forgive and also how to give gifts, and to say thank you, he taught us to walk and how to fall and to feel like getting up again, he taught is to day-dream, to have hopes, to remember and to forget, to ask favors, to contemplate, to travel across paths and enjoy them, to jump barriers, to commit madness, to attempt the impossible, to climb mountains and there on the top, on the highest point we shout: I like you, I love you, I am fond of you, I miss you and I need you.

And 2005 is approaching with this kindness. If we add up its numbers it becomes a cabalistic number, the number 7. Let us await it anxiously and with confidence, calmly peacefully, eagerly. Give thanks for 2004 and for the year 2005 I wish you the best, may you ride on a white unicorn with its crystal horn polished with emery paper and since it is the symbol of transparency and kindness, may you ride on it through the skies of next year until you capture a handful of stardust on the Milky way and share it joyously with everybody surrounding you, your family, your friends, your colleagues at work, your bosses, your co-workers.. but may you save a small endowment in order to distribute it amongst those that are not near or those that do not love you or those that do no treat you favorably or those that do not agree with you.. that way all of us, everybody will have a nicer and fuller year complete with a great zest for life.

Thanks for being my friend. Happy New Year 2005

Hugs
