BINNACLE OF IMAGES

Marenal - Window to the colour
By Ruben Cham - August 2005

The generous count of the expressive possibilities of the colour would be, perhaps, one of the greater virtues in the work of Marenal (Ana Elena Maldonado. DF 1959). The cardinal importance of the chromatic qualities in the work of the author, is of manifesto in the colourful use of a rich one in material and high contrast in the modelled of the forms, and in the great creative freedom assumed in the treatment of the textures that unfold in winding and balances rhythms conferring a tactile effect to the colour and a great dynamism to her plastic language. Superiority of the colour, even in her black and white production in where the accurate pitch combination of the greys entails perhaps a greater technical merit.

The woman is the central element of a thematic that sometimes narrates festive scenes that seemed not to have another origin that the pure playful expression and, in others, in counterpoint, it describes impregnated atmospheres of symbolic content which they urge the reflection or the dream. Marine snails and mythological beings usually accompany to the personages described with great neatness and meticulousness in the accessories, clothes and details with a style that goes from naïve to the symbolist in attractive compositions in where the harmonic disposition of the figures adapts perfectly to the format of the painting. The election of the colour obeys to the intention, obtained, to harness the emotional characteristics of the personages.

Ana Elena Maldonado, Marenal, studied the Masters in Art by the Universidad Autónoma de Nuevo León. She has been scholarship holder of the Fondo Nacional para la Cultura y las Artes(1997) and winner of the FinaciaArte Prize in its 22ª edition (2003).
