Art and Passion - Thomas Lopez Rocha

By Ruben Cham - February 2006 - Leer en Español

There is one constant feature that distinguishes his relevant presence in the world of business, of the car races and of art: the quality of his work and the high level of competition which this gives him.

The artistic vocation of Thomas Lopez Rocha, cultivated throughout his life and a full time job since 1999, has steered with increasing force towards painting, sculpture and installation. His work originates in principle in the magnificent pleasure obtained from the work by the artist and in the invention of the graphic and aesthetic context which best expresses its message, at the same time it exhibits and hides the irony, the paradox, and the reflection stemming from the analysis of the political, economic and social aspects of our environment made with a great creative freedom that is not restricted to a particular style. Abstraction and/or figure are the sustenance of the narrated subject matter through which the author shares his vital personal experience. For this he uses the great variety of means and materials which present technology is offering the contemporary artist.

During the VI Monterrey Biennale two pieces made by him were part of a selection of 24 pieces amongst a universe of 1232 competing pieces corresponding to 581 artists. One of them was Chulas Fronteras (great borders) (mixed without canvas 140 x 180 cm) which deserved one of the three mentioned honorary titles awarded by the state.

During the next month of June Thomas Lopez Rocha will hold an exhibition of his most recent production in the Art Museum of Zapopan and starting in November in the Museum of Hacienda in Mexico City. He is represented in Puerto Vallarta by Gallery Des Artistes where there is a permanent exhibition with an excellent sample of his work.
