"Mandarinas" / Oil on Canvas
When it seems as if the lines were arriving at their destination within the theme or the figure that the master is painting onto the canvas, the stroke of the artist’s brush somehow ―instead of ending― manages to continue and to follow an unexpected course until completing ―without arriving at a final point― a verse of vibrant color.
Of all the characteristics perceived in the paintings of Federico Leon de la Vega, the one that is the most prominent one, in my opinion, is the mastery with which he gives form, dimension and texture to each space of the object and its surroundings, created by him. Ultimately it is this mastery of the lines that allows the observer to clearly discern the detail or details that principally make him identify with what the painter wishes to transmit.
It cannot be stressed enough how in this painting “Mandarinas” (Tangerines) the painter achieves to expand his personal vision of what he is painting, instead of just projecting it. It is as if Federico would tell us murmuring: Look... here is a moment that anybody could or can experience in the usual, trivial, habitual way. But through the painting, that person can become connected to the essence of that moment, valuing it as a special gift, inviting him to stop and to make room for remembering or for awakening creativity.
Colors with its varied hues have been united in a very particular way in order to put us on a stage which appears real to the eye, just as the subject-matter itself. Nonetheless there is as the magic of fantasy present as well, transmitted through the different shades of color, which does not fail to fascinate us. In each of these shades we can observe talents and virtues, such as courage, joy, passion, observation and devotion. Amongst others that the painter as used them to complete his work.
