BINNACLE OF IMAGES

The virtue in "retablo" - Carlos Vargas Pons

By Ruben Cham - June 2006 - Leer en Español

The Painting of Carlos Vargas Pons has great virtues. One of them, is the great compositive and thematic freshness and the comfort and freedom of transit between different styles conserving, throughout his extensive production, a constant and high quality level.

Hyperrealism of excellent realization in which the human figure prevails in literal representation and unusual perspective that surprise and captivate by its expressive power. Abstract of a technical and chromatic wealth that allows the harmonic and balanced coexistence of the intention and the unpredictable. Figurative in personages whose image is transformed by effect of the water into which they appear immersed and in where the aquatic element, that suggests a nucleus or protective cocoon, captures in detail its voluble dynamics. Pointillism, of great conceptual merit, that sends the conclusion of the proposed image to the retina of the spectator.

The Loft, Contemporary Art in Puerto Vallarta offers, in permanent exhibition, an excellent sample of the recent work (2003) from Carlos Vargas Pons. Oils on canvas, in medium format, in a sort of “retablos” that represent provincial scenes and that contain filmic references to the golden age of the Mexican films. Maria Félix and Julio Alemán is the central theme of "Romance" and their respective figures -- as well as the one of a pair of horse heads - preside over the composition on an abstract nest whose lights in pure colours, green, orange, blue and yellow, emphasize the palette in earth tonalities. Three personages, in "Promise", are represented like a family -- Emilio the "Indio" Fernandez might be the father, -in a composition, with architectonic references that enhances the three-dimensional effect of the scene, articulated with the precise and fortunate use of resources of the cubism.

Carlos Vargas Pons (Guadalajara 1968) studied painting and drawing with the teachers Ruiz Rojo, Jose Fors and Davis Birks. He made his first individual exhibitions in 1993 in the Pinacoteca de Nuevo León, the Galería Arte Actual Mexicano, in Monterrey and the Museo Carrillo Gil in Mexico, DF. In 1996, exhibitions of his work had place in the Gallery Thomas Cohn in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil and in Iturralde Gallery in Los Angeles, CA and in 1988 and 2002 in the Instituto Cultural Cabañas, Guadalajara. He received the Prize of Acquisition in 1990 and 1991 in the national encounter of Young Art; the First Prize of the Salón de Octubre of the Instituto Cultural Cabañas; the second prize in the national paint contest, INDART, S.A. and Germán Gedovius, both in 1992, and obtained the scholarship “Jóvenes Creadores” FONCA in 1993 and 2001. His work has been exhibited also in the Kulturzentrum bei den Minoriten, in Australia (2002), in the National Museum of Art of Rumania (2003), in the MARCO Museum, Monterrey (2003), in the Mestna Gallery, Luviana (2004), the Blue Star Contemporary Art Center, Texas (2004), and the Art Contemporary Fair ARCO, in Madrid (2005)
