Art Course at Los Mangos Public Library
Provided by Ambito - July 2006
Maestro Agustin Castro is in Puerto Vallarta for the second time to give an advanced art course to local artists. This course is the result of joined efforts of artist Cecilia Bojorgez, the driving force behind the first course; Galeria Corsica, owned by Jean Pierre Renucci and Jose Villavicencio; and Los Mangos Public Library, which has become the venue for the course, offering artists a comfortable, well-lit space to work.
The first course dictated by Maestro Agustin Castro took place on the Cuale River Island with excellent results. In view of the success of the first course, there was a demand for another one, which was full to capacity just days after being announced, and there was even a waiting list, which is motivating to both the teacher and organizers, and there is even the possibility to have another course next November.
Approximately 40% of the registered artists in the course also took last year’s course.
We attended a class last week and found a very enthusiastic group of artists at work creating their first painting.
Using a trivial pretext, as a shoe can be, the development of artistic skills takes place under the guidance of Agustín Castro, who supervises and orientates the work of each student in a personalized manner, within two methodological alternatives outlined at the beginning of the course by Castro himself.
By means of the class activities, Maestro Castro has every student take their own reading of the theme object, and upon reflecting it on the canvas, to do so by using a new discourse. Each student is expected to complete a painting by the end of each week, which marks the end of each of the course chapters.
Naturally, Maestro Castro is very motivated by the response he has found in Puerto Vallarta. “There is much energy in Vallarta” he says. “This could be the beginning of an art school, with a very unique style of painting”.
And though he considers premature to talk about dividing students into different groups, he says he can propose specific tasks for the most advanced ones. “I think I could have some of the students work on larger formats, for instance”.
The culmination of the course will be an exhibit to be held at Galeria Corsica, on Leona Vicario Street, Downtown; which will be on for a week, once the course is over. This has to be a powerful motivation for the artists, given the prestige of the gallery not only on the local art scene but on a national level.
