Octavio Gonzáles Gutiérrez -Sculptural Legacy
By Jesús de Avila - The Editor - August 2006.

Born in Tepatitlan of Morelos, Jalisco, Octavio Gonzalez Gutierrez has been living in Puerto Vallarta approximately twenty six years, of which the last eight he has dedicated full time to sculpture, contributing in a relevant way through the manifestation of his art in our destination.

The idea of being sculptor is born since his childhood with the taste of creating little figures, among them, dolphins always stood out. The artist mentions that each one of his works is an allegory to life. In all of them he simply wants to transmit what the contact of all beings with their environment in harmony represents for him. By forming each element in his works, he molds what he desires for his life, as well as for what he desires for those that surround him.

Through his sculptural life, Octavio Gonzalez has internationally represented Puerto Vallarta in fairs of art, world-wide promotion events and exhibitions. At the moment many of his sculptures are part of private collections around the world, while others are placed in public spaces of diverse cities in different countries. Of course that our port is not the exception and in different areas by the streets and corners of Puerto Vallarta works of this author can be appreciated, standing out in downtown “The Dolphins Fountain” (La Fuente de los Delfines) of which he is the co-author and was created in honor of the brotherhood with other cities in the world, its location is in front of the arms square by the malecon, right next to the outdoor theater of the arches. In the south region of Mismaloya is located the “Children Fountain” (La Fuente de los Niños) which was placed as an emblem of an orphanage. Also in that zone is found “The Mismaloya Crocodile” (El Cocodrilo de Mismaloya) that has become a favorite place to take photographs. In Marina Vallarta are also found the sculptures of “Las Orcas” in front of the Hotel Velas Vallarta, and “The Golfer with Dolphins” in the entrance of Hotel Marriot Casa Magna. By the malecon of Marina Vallarta is also located the sculpture “The Dolphins”, while in the entrance of this zone along the main avenue of access to the city, is possible to observe the monumental sculpture of “The Vallarta Whale”, since for some years has become another emblem of Vallarta.

The sculptor says that “The Vallarta Whale” besides being his first monumental, was a work created after a very difficult personal time, being born in his inspiration to be a gift for his daughter, as a testimony of a reunion with the spirit and the new life. For this the work represents for the artist his greatest accomplishment. At the end –says the sculptor- ”we are all human beings with the opportunity of rediscovering ourselves all the time, to live in harmony and to be happy giving to others”, and that is what I want to share with “The Vallarta Whale”.

According to the sculptor the steps in the process to create a sculpture are: the visualization of the work, create the model, make the molds, the smelting, the welding, the finish, and installation. Of which the favorite for him is creating the model. He says that for him, to mold is like being caressing the most beautiful woman of the world.

Among his more recent projects are the creation of whales that will be placed in sister cities like Beijing in China, Mission Texas and Santa Barbara Cal. in the United States, as well as a new sculpture of a siren of four meters with a dolphin that will be located in the malecon of La Paz Baja California, and another work that will be inaugurated very soon in a shopping mall in our destination.

All the Works are created and melt in his workshop of Puerto Vallarta that is located in Sierra del Mar 1181, of Colonia Coapinole, which opens to public in general Monday to Friday from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. All are welcome!

The work of Octavio Gonzalez is exposed permanently and can be acquired in his gallery that is located in Avenida Mexico No. 1115, next to Hotel Marlin, in the city downtown. Open to public Monday to Saturday from 10:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m.
