Tribute to the artist Alejando Colunga,
creator of "La Rotunda del Mar (the Sea Rotunda)"
"My mother says that she already felt my brush strokes in her belly. When I was born and the placenta was removed, I was full of colors", Alejandro Colunga.
In his native Guadalajara exactly on the 3rd of November two years ago, the artist Alexander Colunga paid homage to one of the most important people in his career, one of the few people who supported him during 30 years and who financed many of his works, always with great faith in the hands and talent of the creator, his sister Maria Eugenia Colunga who passed away from cancer a few months before.
Two years later, on the same 3rd of November but in 2006 Alejandro himself was also paid homage to, this time for his important career, which we owe for the most part to his dear sister who allowed art lovers to rejoice forever in the work of Alejandro Colunga, the author of the famous "chairs" (the Sea Rotunda) located among other things on the boardwalk in Puerto Vallarta. They are an interactive and favorite site of locals and visitors who without doubt always take a photo of the site with them amongst their memories of the city.
The homage was carried out at the open air theater Aquiles Serdan on the boardwalk also known as Los Arcos (the arches). During the celebration of the anniversary of the radio station of the University of Guadalajara in Puerto Vallarta, Angelica Carmona Perez, director of this radio network, was the person in charge of the event where the important work of Colunga was acknowledged. He carried out his first exhibition in Puerto Vallarta and although a huge part of the pieces themselves got wet when
Passing? his work by the Ameca river, the exhibition was a success and a 100 % was sold at the then Lepe Gallery.
On his part the director of the study house casa de estudios (univerisdad?) Javier Orozco Alvarado also thanked the creator from Guadalajara for his presence and emphasized the importance of Vallarta being one of the most beloved destinations of this talented artist. Subsequently a video was viewed showing the artist’s development and career through his different stages as a painter and sculptor.
During his acceptance speech Alejandro Colunga recalled: "life is full of nostalgia: nostalgia with smiles, outbursts of laughter, happiness and tears. For me Puerto Vallarta has all of it. I will never forget that it was here where I began my career. A huge part of my heart is in Puerto Vallarta, I carry each stone of Vallarta sealed in my heart."
Dressed in a light-colored linen suit Colunga said, not without pride, but also with simplicity, that he feels satisfied about having created an interactive piece of art for this city. "The chairs are for you, I made them with a lot of affection in order to be used and abused, for people to climb up on them and for your children to pee on them, which might even serve to make them prettier" he said provoking laughter in the large audience that filled the seats of the place, but he also admitted that during certain public administrations his pieces of work “were lost a little but I do not want to mention names, the important thing is that they are here now.”
From the hands of Angelica Carmona, Alejandro Colunga received a piece of art by the young artist Fernando Sanchez which consisted in a recorder mounted on a transparent painter’s palette, with various mixed words in reference to the conjunction between art and communication.
Finally after expressing his thanks for the gift the sculptor indicated that among his dreams is the existence of a Museum of Contemporary Art in Puerto Vallarta in order to offer a space for all those new artists who have started to emerge with force; and we have no doubts that his dream will come true. Previously he has already made an example in the city of Monterrey where he and another artist out of a group of 22 artists were the only ones to donate in a generous way two complete pieces of his works estimated at several tens of thousands of pesos.
