The Antidote
There are great moments that fill us with inspiration about the great destiny of Man, due to his creativity, goodwill and imagination.
Moments like the first human step on the moon, the fall of the Berlin wall, the communications’ revolution provoked by the internet, motivate us to want to be part of the force generating such marvels.
I believe we had very sound reasons to be optimistic and to trust in this brighter destiny for mankind.
We did not suspect that with the fall of the Soviet Union, that total power would make a bully of the remaining power.
We did not fear the world would resort to new wars, as there were no apparent reasons for new conflicts among states.
But, all of the sudden, the world seems to have taken the wrong path, foregoing the great opportunity ahead of us to dedicate this excedent richness to offer higher levels of living for the poor and starving peoples of the world.
Most presidents have a select corporate club which is commissioned with the main resources of their country (the main industries, energy, communications, media, and, most importantly, its people’s labor) under the agreement of covering each other.
The voices of the masses therefore go mostly unheard because lawmakers decisions are greatly influenced by lobbyists of huge private enterprises instead of by the voices of the constituents that elected them.
Pharmaceutical companies and drug dealers practically own the instances that were supposed to govern them, both dictate the laws of the land and and easily eliminate any obstacles in their way.
Where and when did we go astray?
There are world leaders who give priority to their very private agenda, to be shared only with the aforementioned exclusive corporate club.
Here, we had one who wanted to privatize our strategic resources. There, the priority was going to war based on whatever excuse. Both dedicated most of their efforts on those failed agendas.
The higher goals of mankind as a whole and those of each and every country were relegated to a lower, less important status.
Their narrow-mindedness prevented them from seeing that generating higher, better levels of living for poor nations would create greater wealth for their own markets.
That the propaganda backing their war could be far more dangerous and divide the world far beyond their scope.
That relaxing the rules that prevented further pollution and its effects on the climate and the balance of elements could affect the future viability of life on the planet.
All of these circumstances could dampen the enthusiasm with which we greeted the third millennium, had we not an antidote.
The antidote is knowing that those of us striving for peace and justice are the majority.
That with each of our actions, with all that we do, say or write, we are building the world that we want.
And that it was individuals like Christ and Gandhi that initiated by themselves alone great movements that changed our history for the good.
These are most auspicious days for recognizing the worth of each and every one of us in the future of humanity.
