ART SHORE

Incorporeal Materiality - Won Lee
By Davis Birks - The Loft Gallery - March 2007

Each sculpture by Won Lee marks an event, an event that initially begins with no expectations. Often working with a live model, the artist enters the studio free of preconceived ideas allowing the work to develop from and arbitrary point of departure guided by his and the model’s emotional states. The substance of this moment at hand is the prelude opening the door to a creative discourse between the artist and his work.

This dialogue Initiates first as tentative and exploratory, progressively strengthening to gradually supersede the need for the model, from which point the artist continues the creative process responding only with the piece he is developing.

Won Lee principally works in bronze or stone, his investigations range from realism to a reduction of form within the parameters of a Modernist tradition. This is an informed creative decision unencumbered by the weight of art history. Here he embraces the postmodern contention of a work of art not derived from an ideal, but rather as a distinct and separate event at once the idea, example and redefinition of itself.

Informed and inspired by the human form, his search is heuristic, not based on logic, where he concentrates on emotional content. The wide range of textural variations found in his work are not simply formal exercises, but rather evidence of the emotional dialogue. During the creative process, Won Lee more than molds or sculpts…he caresses, scrapes, gouges and wounds his work.

Won Lee’s objective regarding his work is simple: To impregnate his work with the grit and soul of a life lived and suspend the intangible essence of being human in a single moment in time.
