Slide Presentation and Pottery Exhibition at Mata Ortiz Art Gallery
Provided By Ambito
On Saturday, December 1, there was a very interesting slide show and pottery exhibition at the terrace in Plaza Peninsula, where Mata Ortiz Art Gallery owner Claudia Lobera described the most interesting aspects of this unique type of Mexican pottery, which has gained recognition throughout North America, as much appreciated collector items.
As it is known, Mata Ortiz Pottery experienced a rebirth when young Juan Quezada found pieces of ancient Casas Grandes pottery, and by intuition, recreated it. Thanks to the great acceptance gained by the pottery, considered one of the finest and most innovative ceramics in the world, the number of potters has increased, resulting in a riches of design, as some of the potters stick to tradition while others are more adventurous and explore new forms and designs. Today there are Mata Ortiz pots decorated with endless lines that follow intricate designs without interruption; others display animal figures that repeat in patterns or interweave, and others are even provided with miniature landscape relieves.
After the slide presentation, Claudia reviewed the ten commandments of a Mata Ortiz collector, which include precepts such as “develop an eye for pottery”, “learn everything you can about Mata Ortiz ceramic”, “meet the artists”, “establish a good relation with the galleries”, “seek a mentor”, “buy the best you can possibly afford” and “never sale”.
During the presentation, the gallery’s excellent collection of Mata Ortiz pottery was up for viewing to the audience’s delight.
Coming from the town of Mata Ortiz, potter Cesar Dominguez and his wife attended the presentation and were in charge of the burning of a pot on a pile of wood. The fire was started in a ceremonial way by EKO, with ethnic music and dances of the world.
Hors d’œuvres and wine of honor were enjoyed by all.
