While the sun sets in the horizon, some clouds start taking over the sky announcing that soon the rain will wash the steep, cobble-stone streets, thirsty for those drops and eager to sing along with the rain a melody that can only be heard in this corner of the world. Suddenly the rain starts to fall and the penetrating aroma of the wet clay-tile roofs of white washed houses permeates the environment, my lungs and my heart, to make me fall in love with this port, to carry it forever in my mind, especially when I may be far away.
I wrote something of the sort the first time I tried to describe the feelings Puerto Vallarta made me experience as I slowly discovered its enchantment towards the end of the seventies.
Time has gone by and although the original small town charm has changed, it is maintained alive and fresh in the minds of thousands of Vallartenses, sometimes as a deep sigh cutting into the conversations and memories of times gone by.
That Puerto Vallarta was the main theme of a conversation last January 5, during a moving event for the official presentation to the local community of the Puerto Vallarta Anthem, composed by Yolanda Guadalupe Garduño Contreras [Pita], daughter of Mrs. Yolanda Contreras de Garduño, a distinguished lady who collaborated in the promotion of Puerto Vallarta in its beginnings as a high profile touristic destination, as well as with her mother, Mrs. Catalina Montes de Oca (first city historian) putting together the Book “Puerto Vallarta My Memories”, one of the most significant local legacies.
Some months back Pita shared with me that finally, after many years, she had decided to record a song written by her for her Puerto Vallarta. I listened to the melody and was able to confirm to her that it definitely evokes the Puerto Vallarta that many of us knew and long for.
Her job had begun; nothing or no one would stop her until she reached her goal. Through many obstacles, with the help of her friends and family, the production of the CD with her composition continued until that day when hundreds of us witnessed its official delivery to our community.
It was a cool evening and the patio of the City Hall was ready to greet the guests who cheerily, like in old times, celebrated birthdays family-style in the town streets, started to arrive and took their places. I cannot help smiling when I recall the faces of surprise when those Vallarta old-timers greeted each other again after many years.
After an introduction that recalled briefly and accurately the life of Pita’s family in Puerto Vallarta, the song was performed first by the Salvation Army Children’s Choir, softening our otherwise stressed and busy hearts. Next, the anthem was sung, country-style by Benjamín Cañas, accompanied by the trio “Los Alegres de Vallarta”, generating an upbeat ambiance among the crowd. To top it off, the young soprano L’oscean Montalvo sang the English version accompanied by the recently formed Municipal Chamber Orchestra, leaving us with an excellent aftertaste.
In a moving recollection of her feelings towards Puerto Vallarta and the adventure of her production, Yolanda spoke to dedicate this delivery, firstly to her mother Yolanda Garduño de Contreras, and to all Vallartenses, especially, of course, those who have shared her life’s anecdotes and experiences in Vallarta. She thanked her husband and children for always being there and for their help and involvement. She also thanked the rest of her family and friends who in many occasions have selflessly supported her, like Mr. Luis Reyes Brambila, Director of the daily Vallarta Opina and the Sciences Doctorate Jefry Steven Fernández Rodríguez.
Javier Bravo Carbajal, City Mayor and former professor, upon receiving the anthem on behalf of our community made a recognition and greeted Yolanda for her work and loving delivery, mentioning among other things: “this composition is an element of great importance that has come to strengthen the identity of our city, giving further sense to what we proudly have and what we are part of”.
Great personalities attended the event, but those who stood out were all the Vallartenses of times back with their beautiful tanned faces decorated with telltale lines of hard work, experience and devotion.
It is quite difficult to bring together a group of people whose trends and paths make them the community’s elite in a city that grows at such breakneck speed. This was precisely a great privilege to those of us who attended the delivery of Puerto Vallarta’s Anthem, thanks to Yolanda’s passion.
Thank God for the life of Yolanda Guadalupe Garduño Contreras and her family and thank you Yolanda for your inspiration and for daring to show it through your song. Email to a friend
