Spanish Experience in PV – Kids love it!
If you spend an afternoon at Puerto Vallarta’s Spanish Experience Center you will see students of all ages from all over the world. Students in their 60’s sit down at computers next to students who still can show you their age by holding up fingers (guess who’s showing who how to surf). Everyone who has learned a foreign language will tell you that it’s never too late to learn, but experts will tell you that the earlier you start, the better. SEC’s highly successful youth program focuses on providing a Spanish immersion experience that allows our students to explore the culture, language and people of Mexico, but don’t let the fact that your kids are going to love it fool you.
Educators and researchers almost universally agree that the earlier your child is taught a second language the better. The academic performance of high school students who have had foreign language instruction during their elementary years excels compared to mono-lingual students, not only in language studies, but also in mathematics and other subjects. Knowing a second language also offers future employment benefits beyond the language skills themselves. Employer surveys have shown that even if a prospective applicant’s foreign language proficiency doesn’t apply to the needs of the job they are applying for, it still gives them a distinct advantage over other applicants by showing ability.
Ok, ok, I admit it. Telling your son or daughter that they’ll get higher SAT scores and have access to better jobs in 15 years probably won’t excite them that much. However, the art, music and cooking workshops, trips to beautiful and exciting places within Puerto Vallarta, parties and events at the school should give you enough to entice them through the door. Students come to our school with a range of different expectations, but in our youth and teen programs, they almost always leave the same way, reluctantly. The friendships they make with the other students in their class give them the opportunity to continue to practice their Spanish while they keep in touch with new friends from around the world.
Since the Spanish Experience Center places so much emphasis on exposing our students to the culture of Mexico, there’s always something going on at the school. Mexico’s many holidays and celebrations provide great opportunities for our teachers and staff to make learning Spanish fun and easy for students of all ages. The younger students are usually enlisted to participate by learning the traditional roots of the holidays and their significance to the culture. They then participate by performing the songs, plays and sometimes even dances that define the people and history of Mexico.
We encourage you to let your children explore the language and culture of Mexico with the Spanish Experience Center. Better yet, enroll in an adult program at the same time and make your trip to Mexico a family experience that will last a lifetime. Email to a friend.
