While I was waiting for a cappuccino, I walked a few steps and discovered a small “gallery of mirrors” that immediately captured my attention, to the extent of momentarily forgetting about my coffee! And that in me, is something quite remarkable.
During the last years gallery-opening fever has been present, just as if they were restaurants, most of them following the same line in what they offer. Not a long span of time goes by without us hearing that a new gallery has opened in the city. Within this context I bumped into Míralo (Look at it) Gallery, getting a big surprise, as, from its first impression ―simple and in good taste― I could see that finally someone did create a distinct space with unique craftsmanship work.
A lot can be said about the art one can admire and acquire here, the magnificent collection of mirrors framed by ceramic tiles deserve to be specially mentioned, as they show a dedicated and patient manual work, overflowing with genuine passion to create and share the sensitivity of a Mexican artist who, by doing what he enjoys the most, is offering fine, eclectic and beautiful pieces, impregnated with colorful details, and making a difference here in our port.
Each piece that Rodolfo Rosas Hernández creates tells its own history, having the same common origin which began with an adventure by the artist while visiting his sister in Florida. Thanks to her he had the chance to get acquainted with ceramic tile art, then later, as a guest of Bud Shafer —his great friend and associate in Míralo— he moved to Seattle and began to seriously study the art, allowing him to affirm his artistic ideas and enrich his technique. It was not long before, on Bud’s advice, Rodolfo started to successfully exhibit and sell his works at the “Flea Market”.
It has been a long journey that brought him here in a short time, it has also turned into the ideal spot for his works to be appreciated as an exceptional display of unique art that is in high demand. Art that is admired and acquired by those who will fully identify with their shapes, sizes, textures and colors.
In every ceramic tile, with the same structural base and following the same line in its transformation process, the artist comes through giving it its unique shape, his perspective and very original art interpretation.
Thanks to the great variety of elements the artist uses, glass, paper, paint, sand, stones, leaves, petals and wood among others; with every detail in his ceramic tiles, Rodolfo brilliantly displays his longing to achieve in every piece, firstly, the very personality that distinguishes the artist’s work, and second, that every ceramic tile can find its affinity with the temperament of the one admiring it.
