Earth Night – Earth Day
By Eduardo Rincón-Gallardo • April 2009

tierraLast Saturday some very sensible people and enterprises decided to give the earth a break, a pause to breathe and recoup from the stress human activities are causing Mother Earth grief.

For one, the Barceló Hotel in Mismaloya, by means of charming Norma Alicia Lynn, invited us to participate in the one hour (8:30 to 9:30pm) blackout, when we would stop using electricity, cars, cell phones, etc. surrounded by this wonderful cove that charmed John Huston into filming here “The Night of the Iguana” in the early sixties, shining the world’s spotlights on Mismaloya and Puerto Vallarta.

The Barceló not only welcomed us, but sent their special transportation service to fetch us in Vallarta, once at the hotel we were given bracelets so that we could enjoy all the amenities this beautiful property has to offer.

To honor the earth we were invited to participate in a form of certification in which you learn how to classify solid waste into seven different categories and bins, for the educational experience to be a truly effective one, you physically separated the different materials and placed them in the corresponding bins.

tierraThen we were shown the procedure of paper recycling and the different art forms one can create while recycling paper, the activities’ staff of the hotel had created beautiful works of art with recycled paper.

Then, at 8:30pm the hotel shut off most of the lights that were not essential to the safety of guests and staff and we were treated to a spectacular show “Aqua Dreams” with torches by the poolside; the huge reflection of the performance in the pool made the stage twice as large and impressing with the colorful performers with their painted bodies in motion and their fiery dances. At one point in time the performance continued with a water ballet, part of the cast submerged at times and then rose lifting the danseuses with their torches, the flames reflected on their beautiful bodies.

At 9:30pm sharp the lights came on again and we were invited to the beachside restaurant where a succulent buffet awaited us, the combination of our gracious hosts hospitality, the ecologic learning experience, the spectacular show and the delicious dinner made for us a most unforgettable evening.

The day after, the organization “Vallarta Verde” and other ecologic groups offered a concert at “La Huerta” the restaurant in the canyonnext to “Paso Ancho” that leads to the sierra along the Cuale River. Everybody was there, people prepared tacos, brought tierrarefreshments and beer and wine; brought their paintings, their necklaces and tools to make personalized souvenirs for visitors, so everything was part of the show. Waste management organizations and recyclers were present providing us with information on their functions and locations to take our stuff to be recycled. One large container was placed by the junction “Libramiento-Paso Ancho” to receive all kinds and sizes of batteries.

I brought a friend who just moved in from Mexico City, she  was very impressed at the integration of our community, you could not tell who there were more of, Mexicans, Americans, Canadians, all having a great time in great harmony, well this is Vallarta… Email to a friend
