ART & CULTURE

Art Walk and Art Night big successes

December 8, 2002

As calendar quirks would have it, both the Art Walk downtown and the Art Night in the Marina were held the same week, the first on Wednesday evening and the latter Friday. Both were extremely successful and well-attended. Dozens of people ambled along, often with glass in hand, chatting among themselves and with the gallery owners and the artists themselves who were there to promote their works.

Eleven galleries pooled together for the Art Walk including Corsica, Arte Latinoamericano, Nova, Galeria Uno, Equilibrio, T. Fuller, Galeria VallARTa, Judith Ewing Morlan's Contemporary Art, etc. Visitors were treated to a myriad styles and media, a veritable cultural buffet. This was the kind of event that raises the level of Puerto Vallarta far above that of a simple beach resort, putting culture in all its wonderful forms front and center.

Painter Martina Goldberg's friend supplied the guitar music and there were excellent finger foods and snacks at the Marina's Art Night. The delicious spread of smoked salmon and capers on baguette, assorted nuts and a fresh wheel of authentic Parmesan cheese, accompanied by a lovely wine and sodas were all donated by La Taverna on the occasion of the event.

Participating galleries included Arte de las Americas, Galeria EM that featured the delicate glass work of Jorge Ortiz, Puerco Azul, and Galeria Flores among others.

The very next evening, Nancy and Lee Chapman inaugurated the second location of their now-famous "Puerco Azul" in the Marina. The new gallery is in the Zona Romantica, around the corner from Basilio Badillo Street, a.k.a. "Restaurant Row", at 325 Constitucion St.

If you are not acquainted with this one yet, and you enjoy light-hearted, whimsical art, then do drop in to either one of Puerco Azul's locations. Nancy writes children's books and husband Lee illustrates them. He has also expanded into multimedia versions of his delightful animal visions… pillows, quilts, posters, lithos, paintings, papier maché, you name it. Just the things to add that touch of humor to any room in your house.
