Gomez Macias Guillermo
was born in Guadalajara, Jalisco. He is the second of nine children in a traditional
Mexican family. From a very early age he was busily recording his ideas and impressions
through drawing and painting. His school years included filling notebooks with
drawings and cartoons of companions and teachers, while studying his other passion,
Biological Sciences.
His first exhibition took place in Vallarta
in 1988 and was extremely well-received. Subsequently, he has participated in
numerous collective and individual exhibitions in Puerto Vallarta. In 1992, he
received first place in the prestigious Salon de Octubre in Guadalajara. He has
received numerous commissions for public works, as well as requests for paintings
and sculptures in diverse formats. Guillermo could spend
years creating any one of his sculptures. It first starts with a story or quote,
then an idea for a sculpture begins to form, but sometimes the total picture does
not conceptualize completely for two years. And I think, we can safely say that
Guillermo is a perfectionist. One of the fascinating concepts of his sculptures
is his amazing combination of different mediums - often including more than one
of the following: bronze, silver, wood, metal, coins, chains, rock or gold. "The
Old Man ....and the Sea?" - one of the newest works. Here Guillermo tells
the true story of Don Jose, an elderly fisherman, who lived on a lovely beach
in Banderas Bay. Don Jose was the proud owner of a boat that was truly a work
of art - made out of a single piece of wood from the trunk of what must have been
a magnificent tree. The boat was a matter of much pride to the old man, a pride
which grew every time someone asked to purchase the boat. Even Guillermo tried
to purchase the boat, but was turned down. The following year Guillermo returned
and much to his surprise the boat had been stolen. Despite the distress of such
an occurrence, Don Jose remained optimistic and so continued his life with such
an attitude. It was in this way that the piece was conceived as homage to those
who instead of obsessing with a situation, continue to navigate in life with the
same passions and fantasies. Guillermo has been
privileged to display his works throughout Mexico, and also in Lima, Peru; Washington,
D.C.; Germany, Israel and the Vatican. Galleria Dante has proudly represented
Guillermo in Puerto Vallarta since 1997. Claire and Joe, are not only proud to
represent such incredible works of art, but are also honored to have the privilege
to work with such a wonderful young man, as Guillermo and his family. Be sure
not to miss opening night on December 28th at Galleria Dante when Guillermo will
be unveiling his latest master pieces. Archives
