Cine-Club Vallarta and the Cultural
Department of Puerto Vallarta Are Pleased To Announce
“An Homage to John Huston”
Puerto Vallarta, Jalisco, Mexico
-- Cine-Club Vallarta and the Cultural Department of
Puerto Vallarta, Mexico, will present “An Homage
to John Huston,” November 22 - 29, 2003, to honor
one of the most renowned directors in the history of
cinema and pay tribute to the man who helped introduce
Puerto Vallarta to the world some 40 years ago by choosing
to film the movie, The Night of the Iguana, at nearby
Mismoloya in 1963.
The
Homage will feature screenings of different Huston-directed
films each night during the event, selected from his
extensive archives of classic motion pictures. A brief
lecture each evening will be given to provide background
on Huston’s life, his career and his personal
memories of Mexico and Puerto Vallarta.
Opening night, Saturday, November
22, will launch the Homage festivities beginning with
a welcoming presentation by special guests and the screening
of the first Huston film. Each night another Huston-directed
film will be shown. The Homage will conclude in celebratory
style on Saturday, November 29, with the screening of
the televised 1982 American Film Institute’s Life
Achievement Award ceremony for John Huston.
The lectures and Souvenir Program
will be presented in Spanish and English, and the films
will be sub-titled in Spanish if available. Each evening
presentation will be held at the new Cultural Center
on the Rio Cuale Island, just steps from the John Huston
statue. All of the screenings and lectures are open
to the public at no charge.
The combination of lectures and
film screenings provides an opportunity for attendees
to discover John Huston’s approach to filmmaking
and his genuinely unique style of directing. He employed
brilliant cinematic techniques and elicited award-winning
performances from actors to convey dramatic stories
in the art form of film. Huston was a masterful craftsman
and storyteller, and his body of work continues to captivate
audiences and influence modern directors all over the
world.
John Huston was considered a maverick
in Hollywood, preferring to go his own way by choosing
his own material and working in remote locations away
from the glitzy Mecca of moviemaking. Huston was a lifelong
aficionado of Mexico and some of his best work was filmed
here, which included the talents of Mexico’s own
cinema legends like cinematographer Gabriel Figueroa
and director-actor Emilio Fernandez.

and Danny Huston announcing
Puerto Vallarta Film Festival. |
The extent of his affection for Mexico
and Puerto Vallarta was poignantly made clear when Huston
chose to live the last 20 years of his life here and
at nearby Las Caletas.
John Huston fills the center of
a rich legacy of filmmaking. The Huston family is the
only one in which there are three generations of Academy
Award winners: his father Walter Huston, John himself
and daughter Anjelica Huston have each received Oscars
for their superior work in the art of film.
Joining in the festivities and the
events during the Homage will be Huston family members
and friends, including many locals from Puerto Vallarta,
who will share stories about the life and times of this
truly remarkable man, the legendary John Huston.
During the Homage, extensive plans
will be announced regarding the 2004 Puerto Vallarta
Film Festival. This major festival promises to be a
spectacular international event that will focus on several
aspects of Mexican culture. The 2004 Puerto Vallarta
Film Festival will also inaugurate the presentation
of the John Huston “Maverick” Awards for
Best Film and Best Director.
Additional information about the
Homage to John Huston will be released as it is finalized.
