La Pintada – Cave Paintings?
By Javier Niño - November 8, 2003 - Leer Español

About fifteen years ago, journalist Marco Antonio León took me to see "La Pintada", an ancient painting protected by the exuberant mountain forest. I don’t know if it still exists, but based on the characteristics I saw back then, I would think it is still intact.

Walking along the banks of one of the Tomatlán River’s tributaries east of El Tuito, you suddenly come upon a rocky outcrop above which is a painted wall filled with strange figures and hyeroglyphics. The few inhabitants of the area call it "La Pintada". You can only take pictures of it with a telephoto lens as the wall where the paintings are is approximately 10 to 15 meters above the ground, or 30 to 45 feet.

The surface of the rock bearing the paintings is very special, it looks as if the rock was cut out with a huge spoon, leaving a smooth concave surface so that the paintings are protected from the rains and humidity cannot harm them as they are on pure rock. The sun cannot affect them either as the surrounding forest hides them. Their main enemy - man – cannot affect them as the rock face is nearly perfectly vertical so no one can touch it. The surface is extremely smooth and if anyone should attempt to climb it, he would easily fall to the rocky bottom of the river so that one would need highly specialized equipment to climb that rock wall.

Could this be a wall of prehistoric art or just some paintings a few hundred years old? I have asked people who know the place but they had no answers for me. Oldsters told me they have been seeing those paintings ever since they were children.

A few years ago, I told a Canadian friend of mine, of Irish origin, about La Pintada. He wanted to see the place and invited a group of his friends to accompany him. Afterwards, he told me that he was very surprised at the sight because he had seen some hyeroglyphics there that resembled those of paintings that had been discovered in Ireland.

As we know, rock or cave paintings are prehistoric works on stone or rock. The most important were discovered in 1879 in a cave in Altamira, Spain. They are the most famous group of prehistoric paintings known to date. Their authenticity was verified in 1902, when the study and excavation work began. The dominant themes are the representations of animals, especially bisons. There are also illustrations of men with animal heads. The importance of this art treasure is such that they have given it the name of the Sistine Chapel of prehistoric art.

I believe that La Pintada should be studied more in depth, by real experts, in order to date it properly.
