The 70's

At that time, in the Seventies,
there were few of us active painters in Puerto
Vallarta. I think it was in 1973 or 1974 that Manuel
Lepe invited me to take part in a TV interview
on the most important program of the time in Mexico,
broadcast internationally by Televisa's Channel
2. The program was called "Siempre
en Domingo" ("Always on Sunday"), produced by
famous conductor Raúl Velazco. I was living
up on the hill in Paso Ancho at the time, some 700
meters above where Ada Colorina has her studio-gallery
today. I had bought the land and built a cabaña
there where I studied, practiced yoga and meditated.
At that time, our country was under a strong influence
of Buddhist philosophy. During my last year in Mexico
City, I gave yoga classes at the G.F.U., an institute
founded by French doctor Serge Reynaud de Laferriere.
I wanted to know myself in depth and they said that
yoga was an efficient method to do so. I remember
that my maternal grandfather Jesús Rodríguez "El
Zarco" would look at me in confusion, he didn't
understand me. To him, I was a disoriented, eccentric
young man. He had taken charge of our family ever
since my father Luis Niño had passed away,
many years prior. By the way, my grandfather became
Mayor of Puerto Vallarta in 1936.
During that television program,
we all presented our paintings, Manuel Lepe, Manuel
Martínez,
Daniel Inchaurregui (Ada Colorina's father) and myself.
From that point on, many opportunities arose for
that handful of Vallarta painters.
Of the foreign painters
of those times, I remember Starr, Bernice's husband,
that grande dame who made it possible for hundreds
of youngsters to receive great benefits through
her extraordinary studio scholarships. I remember
Mrs. Digur Weber, Russell Davis, Lucy Shipley.
My good friend Jesús Castillo told
me that his girlfriend painted very well. She was
a beautiful young American that I had seen from time
to time on the street, but Jesus never had the chance
to introduce us until years later when they had a
child. That young painter became very famous today.
Her name is Martha Gilbert. I am probably forgetting
other painters of the time at this moment, but I
can assure you that there were no more than four...
All in all, we were only ten or twelve painters in
Puerto Vallarta at the beginning of the Seventies.

En esos años de los setentas fuimos pocos
los pintores en PV que estábamos activos,
creo que en 1973 o 1974, Manuel Lepe me
invitó a participar en una entrevista de televisión
en el programa más importante de aquella época
en el país, con proyección internacional
del canal 2 de Televisa, el programa se llamaba "Siempre
en Domingo" y era producido por el famoso
conductor Raúl Velazco, en ese tiempo yo vivía
en el cerro del "Paso Ancho" a unos
700 metros arriba de la actual galería de
Ada Colorina, en ese lugar compré y construí una
cabaña en donde pintaba estudiaba, practicaba
yoga y meditación, era el tiempo de una fuerte
influencia de la filosofía hindú en
nuestro país, en el último año
de mi permanencia en la ciudad de México viví y
dí clases de yoga en la G.F.U. este era un
instituto fundado por el Dr. francés Serge
Reynaud de Laferriere, yo deseaba conocerme a mí mismo
a profundidad y el yoga decían, era una ruta
muy efectiva para lograr ese nivel, recuerdo que
mi abuelo materno Jesús Rodríguez " El
Zarco" me miraba con desconcierto, no me entendía,
para él yo era un muchacho extravagante y
desorientado, él se había hecho cargo
de mi familia pues mi padre Luis Niño había
fallecido muchos años atrás, apropósito
de mi abuelo él fue presidente de Puerto Vallarta
en el año de 1936.
En dicho programa de televisión, presentamos
nuestras pinturas; Manuel Lepe, Manuel Martínez,
Daniel Inchaurregui (padre de Ada Colorina) y yo.
A partir de ese momento surgieron muchas oportunidades
artísticas para aquél puñado
de pintores de Puerto Vallarta.
De los pintores extranjeros
de aquella época
recuerdo a Starr, esposo de Berenice Starr,
gran dama, que hizo posible que cientos de jóvenes
recibiremos gran beneficio con su extraordinario
programa de becas de estudio, de la Señora
Digur Weber, Rusell Davis, Lucy Chipley, mi buen
amigo Jesús Castillo me contaba que su novia
pintaba muy bien, ella era una guapa joven norteamericana,
que yo miré algunas veces por las calles,
pero nunca se dio la oportunidad de que Jesús
me la presentara, sino años después
cuando tuvieron un hijo, esa joven pintora es muy
famosa actualmente, su nombre es: Martha Gilbert.
Es posible que se me olviden por el momento algunos
otros pintores de aquella época pero puedo
asegurar que no son más de cuatro, aquel inicio
de los setentas éramos solo diez o doce pintores
en nuestra ciudad.
