Painters in the 70's in
P.V.

In the Sixties, I was an
amateur painter, but I wanted to learn more so
I went to study at the Academia de San Carlos of
the Universidad Autónoma
de México (U.N.A.M) in Mexico City.
In the early 70's, during
my vacations, I used to come to Vallarta for a
little fun. The atmosphere in that huge city, the
country's capital, was very heavy. On one of those
occasions, Manuel Lepe invited me to participate
in the first "jardín
del arte" (art garden) that was set up in the
Aquiles Serdán here in our town. The painters
who participated in that first event were: Manuel
Lepe, Manuel Martínez, Armando Lozano, Paco
de la Peña and myself. It was a garden where
they gave classes in drawing, painting and sculpture,
and that is where I met my beloved spouse Rosa Niño.
She was a 12 or 14-year old youngster then. The garden
operated for a few weeks and it was quite well received
by the community.
Some time later, during another vacation, Lepe invited
me to exhibit in his gallery, in a collective showing.
I remember the place being filled with people. That
is where I sold my second painting (another time
I will tell you who purchased my first collection).
This time they paid me $60 or $600 dollars, I really
don't remember, but it was a surrealistic painting
that I liked very much. I will never forget it.
In those times, Armando
Lozano, who was a sculptor, opened a small gallery
in one of those locales that belonged to my mother,
right next to my present gallery. He presented
an exhibit that caught my attention, by Alejandro
Colunga, a painter from the city of Guadalajara,
whose fame has reached international levels today.
By the way, Alejandro Colunga
once painted all the walls of a huge disco located
upstairs where the Banco Internacional is today,
at the foot of the old Rio Cuale bridge. Truth be
told, I don't remember the name of that discotheque,
but what I do remember very well is that those paintings
were very artistic. I liked them a lot. That was
quite a job he did there! A little later, the disco
went bankrupt and they replaced it with a "variety hall" called "Zokos" but
that new company decided to paint over Colunga's
murals with white paint. So there they are, those
artworks, I don't know if they can be rescued, but
if they can, they would surely be worth a fortune
because Alejandro Colunga is a painter who is very
much sought after nowadays, one of Mexico's outstanding
artists. Merry Christmas!
Los Pintores de los 70's en P. V.
En
los años 60's yo era un pintor aficionado,
pero quise aprender más y me fui a estudiar
a la academia de San Carlos de la Universidad Autónoma
de México "U.N.A.M" en la ciudad de
México.
Corría el año de 1970 y en mis vacaciones
me venía a Vallarta a recrearme, pues era muy
pesado el ambiente de esa gran ciudad capital del país.
En uno de esos tiempos Manuel Lepe me invitó a
participar en el primer "jardín del arte" que
se instaló en el parque Aquiles Serdán
aquí en nuestra ciudad, los pintores participantes
en esa primera ocasión fuimos: Manuel Lepe,
Manuel Martínez, Armando Lozano, Paco de la
Peña y yo, fue un jardín donde se impartieron
clases de dibujo, pintura y escultura, fue allí en
donde conocí a mi amada esposa Rosa Niño,
ella era entonces una jovencita de 12 o 14 años,
el jardín funcionó algunas semanas y
fue bien recibido por la comunidad.
Tiempo después en otra vacaciones que tuve,
Lepe me invitó a exponer en su galería
en una muestra colectiva, donde recuerdo estaba a reventar
de gente y fue allí en donde vendí mi
segunda pintura (en otra ocasión les diré quien
me compró mi primera colección), en esa
ocasión me pagaron $ 60.00 o 600.00 dólares
no lo recuerdo muy bien, pero era una pintura surrealista
que a mí me gustaba mucho, no la podré olvidar
nunca.
Por esos tiempos Armando Lozano,
que era escultor abrió una pequeña galería en uno
de los locales propiedad de mi madre, justo al lado
de mi galería actual y presentó una exposición
que me llamó mucho la atención, era "Alejandro
Colunga" un pintor originario de la ciudad de
Guadalajara y hoy con fama internacional, apropósito
de Alejandro Colunga, en una ocasión pintó todas
las paredes de una gran discoteca que estaba ubicada
en la planta alta en donde está actualmente
el banco Internacional, junto al puente viejo del río
Cuale, la verdad no recuerdo el nombre de esa discoteca,
lo que sí recuerdo muy bien es que esas pinturas
eran muy artísticas, a mí me gustaban
mucho, fue bastante el trabajo que realizó Alejandro
allí, tiempo después esa discoteca quebró y
pusieron un salón de variedades que se llamaba" Zokos" pero
esa nueva empresa decidió tapar los murales
de Colunga con pintura blanca, allí están
esas obras de arte, no sé si se podrán
recuperar, pero si logran despegarlas valen una fortuna,
porque Alejandro Colunga es un pintor muy cotizado
en la actualidad y ya forma parte entre los pintores
destacados de México.
