ART & CULTURE

The sculptures have returned!
By: The editor.
January 10, 2004

By Jesus de AvilaAfter several months of uncertainty, "The Rotunda of the Sea" a group of sculptures created by Alejandro Colunga,  has been put up at the same spot on the boardwalk where it had been before hurricane Kenna lashed our city.

There is no doubt that ever since these sculptures were put up for the first time in 1997, they have generated a warm feeling and a great interaction between the pedestrians of the boardwalk, whether they are kids or adults.

I remember that I thought many times while observing them,  that even though the theme of each sculpture was related to the ocean, they did not fit the image of Vallarta as a "village" due to their exotic and contemporary form. Several times I reached the point of detesting them. Today, however, I realize that each one of these sculptures, while contrasting with the village image, are nevertheless integrated in the scenery to such a point that they form a unique space within the customary. They have achieved that each and every one who walks along the malecon sees them - almost without realizing it - like an oasis while crossing the desert.By Jesus de Avila Today I consider them a resting place for the eyes, a challenge for imagination, an invitation for reflection and a metal detail filtered through  the skin.

The sculptures already constitute a part of the boardwalk and have become another symbol of Puerto Vallarta due to the activity they generate around them (in their vicinity). Based upon my observations I am certain that at present people are taking more photos of these sculptures than even of the seahorse, which always has been the icon that identifies Puerto Vallarta all around the world.

Again we say welcome to the sculptures of Alejandro Colunga.
