Dinner-Theater at Santa Barbara

By Anna Reisman - December 1, 2002

We published articles on the preparations for this season's productions of Vallarta's own Spotlight Players. We also published articles on the group's needs for space and volunteers and actors, etc. etc. But no one has written about the play itself, the Spotlight Players' first offering of the season - "On Golden Pond" - so my friend and I decided to go check it out for ourselves last week.

Dinner theater evenings at Santa Barbara begin with dinner at 6:30. Plenty of time to enjoy a leisurely meal before the performance that usually starts around 8. The menu includes four main courses for guests to choose from: fish, chicken, pasta or roll of pork stuffed with berries (or as our delightful waiter called it, "Berry, berry pork"). We opted for the latter and we were glad we did. This rolled loin of pork was juicy, tender and delicious, accompanied by well-prepared and well-presented assorted veggies. The appetizer was a small mixed salad with a light and flavorful house dressing and the dessert was one of Kathy Overly's famous cakes… What more could we ask for? Delicious, satisfying and very reasonable when you consider that all that - plus the play - only costs $250. pesos.

"On Golden Pond", a tale by Ernest Thompson can be rather heavy emotionally-speaking depending on who the actors are, but here in the vacation paradise that is Puerto Vallarta, director Kathleen Hennan and Stage Managers Karen King and Nanci Wills eliminated the not-so-happy ending and retired dancer/skater/actor Frank Meyers infused the role of Norman with delightful lightheartedness that engendered much laughter in the audience throughout the entire performance.

The part of Ethel (Norman's loving wife) as played by Beverly Rose struck a humorous -and very familiar- chord among members in the audience on the other side of 50...

This is one fun way of spending an evening in Vallarta: a good dinner, good company, a good performance, all at a most reasonable price. Performances on Sundays, Mondays and Fridays until December 20th. Reservations at 222-4477.
