| Tellosa
to Open at Galleria Dante
32 years exhibiting in Vallarta.
Born
Jesus Botello in Tacambaro, Michoacan in 1936 - Jesus
is known to most collectors as Tellosa. Raised in Guadalajara
and California. His formal art studies began at the
Instituto Cultural Mexico-Nortamericano in Guadalajara
(1958-1960). It was during this time that a series of
portraits in pencil and charcoal showed his natural
drawing ability and sensitivity for capturing the essence
of his subjects. In the early sixties he started to
work with different mediums using bold brush strokes,
painting with spatulas and experimenting with collage
techniques, thus beginning to find his own voice. Chagall,
Klee, and Picasso al left their mark on Tellosa's early
work and in 1960 he had his first solo exhibition at
the Degollado Gallery in Guadalajara.
In 1961 he married and moved to London
where his daughter, Catalina was born in 1962. He continued
his art studies at the Regent Polytechnic Institute
in London and over the next few years participated in
several collective exhibitions in London. In 1966, he
had his first solo show at the Rimmer Gallery. Also
at this time he illustrated several children's books
for the BBC Educational Department.
During his time in London, (nearly
20 years) he traveled extensively throughout the Middle
East and the Mediterranean and his fascination for these
cultures began to show in his work. His love for Antiquities
and Ancient Cultures became and continues to be a major
influence in his work. Over the years we have seen many
different phases to his art. "My favorite will
always be his ribbon period. I first saw his work in
1982 and fell in love with his creative, gentle, spirit."
In the seventies he became interested
in jewelry design and in 1974 created his first collection
in sliver and gold incorporating ancient amulets, coins
and fragments. He developed this further by formal studies
in jewelry design in London. In 1975 Tellosa was invited
to take part in London's Goldsmiths Hall Contemporary
Jewelry Design Exhibition "Loot" under the
direction of Graham Hughes. To this day his jewelry
is in great demand and continues to be a very exciting
and innovative part of Tellosa's creative life.
In 1980 he returned to Mexico. He
now works in bronze, sheet metal and ceramics as well
as continuing to paint and design jewelry. He produces
large scale works on commission. If you have a chance
to visit the Hotel Regina or Holiday Inn in Puerto Vallarta,
both have large installations by Tellosa. His works
are in private collections in the USA, Canada, Mexico,
Australia, England, France, Switzerland, Holland, and
Italy.
Tellosa lives and works in Puerto
Vallarta, but is looking to relocate next year, possibly
to the State of Veracruz. He loves the climate, culture
and surroundings of the area he holds dear to his heart.
He will continue to return to Vallarta once a year to
exhibit with Galleria Dante. Please join them on December
13th, 2003 in applauding Tellosa, who has exhibited
in Vallarta since 1971.
