The Vallarta Group

In 1977-1978, new painters
appeared and we formed what we called the "Vallarta Group". In city historian
Carlos Munguia's latest book entitled "A Historic
Panorama of Puerto Vallarta and Bahía de Banderas",
the chronicler makes reference to this group of painters.
It was composed of José Marca, Joaquín
Rodríguez Pedroza, Juan Pueblo, Katy Huet,
Escadím and myself. This group gave much promotion
to painting in our town, with exhibitions in galleries,
hotels, restaurants, golf courses, plazas etc.
I also remember that on
one occasion, we hung many posters all around town
and a city functionary fined us for not having
authorization to hang those posters. The funny
thing about this story is that the particular city
employee who did not want to forgive the fine is
a famous artist today. Another time I may tell
you his name.
In fact, those of us who
made up that group of artists laughed at what had
happened and that former functionary is a good
friend of ours today. I also find it funny that
my good friend Helmut, a Chilean painter, once
told me: "Here in Puerto Vallarta, there is a bacteria
that is infecting half the world. All those who come
to Vallarta for the first time soon becomes infected
with the art of painting and within a few weeks,
he's exhibiting his paintings in one place or another.
To give you a brief comment about some of the members
of the Vallarta Group: Juan Pueblo comes from Zacatecas,
a great sculptor, poet, painter and musician, he
was very enthusiastic and worked very well in the
sculpture of stone. During the first exhibit in which
we took part in the city of Santa Barbara, California,
he liked the atmosphere of that city so much that
he decided to live there, sculpting and painting
murals. Afterwards, he moved to Los Angeles where
he also painted various murals. I don't know where
he is today, I lost track of him.
José Marca is from Mexico City. A self-taught
painter, he was also very enthusiastic and participated
wholeheartedly. His modernistic style earned him
very good critiques from the media in those times.
In 1977, Lepe invited us to participate in a collective
exhibition at the famous Marina del Rey Regatta in
California, held at the port terminal there. We were
all there, Manuel Lepe, José Marca and myself.
This regatta event and the exhibit echoed across
the country as papers such as the "Heraldo de México" covered
them. The place was packed with people.
In 1979, the Camino Real hotel and the Jalisco Departament
of Fine Arts organized a showing of paintings with
the Vallarta Group and Manuel Lepe was the special
guest of honor. Once again the impact of the publicity
spread across the country as the media from Mexico
City and Guadalajara covered the event.

Grupo Vallarta

En 1977-1978, surgieron
nuevos pintores y formamos un grupo "El Grupo Vallarta" en el último
libro del cronista de la ciudad del señor
Carlos Munguía titulado "Panorama
Histórico de Puerto Vallarta y Bahía
de Banderas" página 16, el cronista hace
referencia a este grupo de pintores. Estuvo formado
por Josè Marca, Joaquín Rodríguez
Pedroza, Juan Pueblo, Katy Huet, Escadím y
yo, con ese grupo dimos mucha promoción al
arte pictórico en nuestra ciudad, haciendo
exhibiciones en galerías, hoteles, restaurantes,
campos de golf, plazas etc. Recuerdo también
que en una ocasión pegamos muchos carteles
por las calles de la ciudad y un funcionario del
gobierno municipal nos multó por no sacar
permiso para pegar carteles, lo curioso de este suceso
es que aquel funcionario que no quiso perdonarnos
la multa es hoy un famoso artista, en otra ocasión
les diré cual es su nombre. En la actualidad
los que formamos aquel grupo de artistas, nos reímos
de lo sucedido pues este ex funcionario es hoy un
buen amigo nuestro. También me parece gracioso
lo que mi buen amigo Helmut, pintor chileno me dijo: "aquí en
P. V. existe una bacteria que anda contagiando a
medio mundo, pues todo aquel que llega por primera
vez a Vallarta, rápidamente se contagia del
arte de la pintura y en pocas semanas ya esta exhibiendo
arte pictórico en algún lugar.
Les daré un breve comentario de algunos de
estos integrantes del Grupo Vallarta: Juan Pueblo
es originario de Zacatecas, un gran escultor, poeta,
pintor y músico, era muy entusiasta, trabajaba
muy bien la escultura en piedra, en nuestra primera
exhibición que participamos en la ciudad de
Santa Barbara California, le gustó tanto el
ambiente de aquella ciudad que decidió radicar
allí, haciendo esculturas y murales pictóricos,
luego se fue a Los Angeles en donde ha pintado varios
murales, en la actualidad no sé en donde estará pues
le perdí la pista.
José Marca, originario de la ciudad de México,
pintor autodidacta, era también muy entusiasta
y participativo, su estilo de corte modernista recibía
buenos comentarios de la prensa de aquellos años.
En 1977 Lepe nos invitó a participar en una
muestra colectiva en la famosa Regata de Marina del
Rey California que se llevó a cabo en la terminal
marítima de nuestra ciudad, allí estuvimos
Manuel Lepe, José Marca y yo, este evento
de la regata y la muestra tuvo eco nacional pues
periódicos como el Heraldo de México
cubrieron la información, aquello estaba a
reventar de gente.
En 1979 el hotel Camino
Real y el Departamento de Bellas Artes de Jalisco,
organizaron una muestra de arte pictórico con el grupo Vallarta y
como invitado especial estuvo Manuel lepe, nuevamente
el impacto publicitario fue a nivel nacional pues
diarios de la ciudad de México y Guadalajara
difundieron el evento.
