The appointment was at 7:30 a.m. on the Los Peines pier. After a few minutes of waiting next to a great number of tourists who also were anxious to leave in order to go fishing, I saw Mary Ann, Jamie and their parents arriving very excited, carrying with them an ice chest containing water, fruit, sandwiches and others snacks. While observing the museum of stuffed species ―and there was no trace of Bruno anywhere– we asked ourselves if our boat really had been confirmed or not. Suddenly Bruno senior showed up and after making sure that we paid for our fishing license, he invited us to follow him. We continued a few steps across the pier and we were in front of one of the three boats called Marimar which was the one we would embark and which was commanded by Captain Bruno junior.
After confirming our reservation, our captain told us that we should get on board since it was time to leave. While we boarded the yacht, Bruno recognized Jaime from his trip last year. He invited us to take a seat and get comfortable. Taking the rudder he directed the boat’s bow towards the exit of the piers and the marina heading towards the waters of the bay. The sun was rising and upon turning back around, the view of the city, starting to be caressed by the light of the sun, was “as always” simply spectacular. For a moment each one of us from his place enjoyed the scenery in silence. The smile on Jamie’s face was inevitable... he loves to go fishing and finally his most longed for adventure had begun.
Seated on stern we started to chat while drinking coffee and eating sweet rolls. Before marking to the course a crew member approached and explained to us:
”okay friends we can go in search of marlin, sail fish, tuna, mahi mahi or bonitas” and he asked us: “which fish would you prefer to catch?”
Immediately Jamie got close to him and told him:
“this time definitely let’s go for red snapper”
To this the crew member responded:
“So be it, my friend“
and he informed the captain who immediately saw to it that we sailed towards a specific spot which would be our target.
A little while after having set sail, I went upstairs to the highest deck to talk to Bruno. I wanted to remain alert and at a vantage point in case a humpback whale would show up and could be observed. I started my conversation with Bruno asking him to tell me how he got into this fishing business. He began to share not only that but also how his father had become a fisherman more than forty years ago. After navigating towards the north for approximately forty minutes, we were interrupted by a radio message telling Bruno that the bank of fish that we were looking for was located at another area of the bay. While changing the course towards the Southeast he notified his crew member about the new destination and asked him to position the fishing rods and the baits since fishing could start any moment now. A bird flied across the sky very close to our boat and fixing his eyes on that part of the horizon the bird was heading towards, Bruno told me: "We are looking for the place where all the cousins of this bird are having breakfast... there we will find our fish” At those moments while Bruno was accelerating I turned around towards the back and observed some dolphins escorting our boat, moving at great speed and jumping towards the surface. For an instant I felt that the temperature of my blood had risen. The fuse of the emotion of adventure had been ignited.
Just a short time passed until we found ourselves close to the coast approximately at the vicinity of a place called Chimo, which is a preferred spot to go scuba-diving. Bruno had big smile on his face. Indeed there were hundreds of birds there having their favorite dish for breakfast. The fishing rods were already in place and the baits in the water were inviting the fish to bite. At once we could hear the unmistakable sound of the rod being pulled by a fish. Naturally Jamie was the first one to take the rod and his first catch was a regular size bonita. For quite a while we stayed there having fun, catching bonitas, tunas and other species. Even though they were not that big, they fought nevertheless causing our muscles and nerves to remain tense. We all fished however by that time Jamie still had not caught the desired red snapper.
We began to navegate towards another area when the crew member invited Jamie to stay alert while moving the fishing rod to lift and lower the bait thus inviting some red snapper to bite. Jamie’s patience was compensated with three delicious red snappers of a fairly good size. I call them delicious because all three of them were our fresh and succulent dinner prepared by the restaurant Roberto’s who did us the favor of cooking them for us that same night. Eating one’s own capture of the day is definitely an enriching and satisfying experience.
Once we started to turn back the captain left 2 long line fishing rods in the water and naturally the fish continued to bite. During the return trip we observed manta rays, turtles and dolphins. At the end of the trip our catch was quite good: we had a fair number of bonitas, tunas, toritos, other species and of course red snapper. It is important to mention that our catch was based on Jamie’s request. There are fishermen that prefer to go after marlins or sail fish and thus have another kind of experience.
We were five passengers on board. Jamie paid USD 350.00 for this trip, which I consider to be a reasonable amount since not all the fishing boats are charging the same. The prices vary depending on different factors such as the length of time you want to go fishing, the number of passengers or whether it is an exclusive fishing cahrter. Prices also depend on the type and the size of the fishing boat.
During the whole time Bruno and his crew member ―who is also a happy member of the family― were very obliging and accommodating and they were excellent hosts. Bruno was very attentive sharing meaningful details that made me feel like someone we had known for a long time. I would like to thank him for his trust disclosing things about the very interesting life of his parents and his family. Thanks so much.
Before finishing this story there is something that is essential to mention: Bruno’s fishing business is family based and was founded by Bruno’s father, who is a fishing fan and at the moment its main promoter. You can find him every day on the beach located between the Holiday Inn and the Fiesta Americana hotels in the northern hotel zone promoting his business. You can also contact him via email at brunosfishing@yahoo.com or by the following local phone numbers: 222-0265 or 223-2194.
After this very refreshing adventure I conclude with the comment that Friday is a very good day to go fishing!.
See you next time in this world of endless discovery.
