ENDLESS DISCOVERING

Thank God for El Tuito!
By Eduardo Rincón-Gallardo – September 2006. - Leer en Español

Although Vallarta is a true paradise the better part of the year, those of us who live here on a permanent basis, sometimes long for a break from the Summer’s heat and humidity.

That is why Puerto Vallarta’s mountainside location could hardly be more fortunate.

A fantastic gallery of sights opens before us from the first moments of our ride on road 200 heading south, be it the residential cliffs of Conchas Chinas, or the colourful inlets of Mismaloya and Boca de Tomatlán, or the deep and spectacular gulch alive with thick vegetation and water either pouring or trickling down all over.

By now we have already started climbing the sierra, watching and feeling the changes in landscape and climate by the minute. When you least expect it you are already surrounded by pines and firs filling us with delightful aromas from an atmosphere that is light and fresh.

So pleasant a ride makes the half-hour to “El Tuito” seem shorter… Hey! We are already in the middle of a real colonial town and everywhere we turn we are overwhelmed by rich images of a distant past in traditional and immemorial Mexico.

Its style is brimming with antique processes, like that of their enduring tiles that are used over and again, sculptured beams and doors, adobe (wide bricks of uncooked clay and straw).

There is a silent and inviting poetry in its archways, patios and streets.

Possibly the one that Mexicans translate as: “mi casa es tu casa”.

Or that smile telling you where to find their buttermilk, fresh cheese, honey or raicilla (local moonshine).

If you smell the charcoal from their fires, time comes to a standstill..

If you leave, you carry with you a great treasure.

If you stay, you live forever.
