ENDLESS DISCOVERING

At the top of “La Bufa” Mountain

By Silvia Álvarez – 30 Grados Lectura Cálida • Translation & Photos by Eduardo Rincón-Gallardo • February 2009

La bufa“It’s a ten-minute walk where you can see San Sebastián and if you are lucky you will see Puerto Vallarta from the biggest Boulder, it’s about 40 minutes by car” we were told by the woman in charge of the grocery store whom we had asked how to reach La Bufa Mountain.

The truck journey was not as tough as we had anticipated; we even stopped to take some family pictures en route. The vegetation changed gradually but temperature dropped notably as we climbed to our goal located at 6,644 feet above sea level.

La Bufa is of such importance to San Sebastián del Oeste, that it appears on its coat of arms, surrounded by a great forest of pines, oaks, parotas and ash trees among other precious woods that are one of the main natural resources of this town, that still today stands out for its great rustic beauty and its well maintained antique buildings that centuries ago gave life to a prestigious mining town.

Among the recommendations we received were the practice of an unending number of activities: camping, birdwatching, mountain climbing, rappel, horseback riding, mountain biking and photography.

We were very excited at the prospect of having this beautiful region at our feet, and although it was somewhat disappointing to see an enormous antenna when we parked the truck at the summit, the journey did not end there and our hope to disconnect from modernity remained very much alive during our hike on foot.

A path lead the way and we followed it joyfully; we encountered a family of foreigners that were returning, their patriarch, as he wiped the sweat from his face, told us: “it’s kind of tiring, but it’s worth it”, this further encouraged us to continue.

La bufa The path among rocks and trees can be tough for those without a minimum of physical condition, but as the tourist said, it is worth a little effort to get to see the magnificent view of the region that suddenly opened before our eyes after the last brief hike. An ocean of wild green waves unfolds under La Bufa. Like an island among its peaks San Sebastián emerges with its red-tile roofs, like miniature hats under the sun. There is not a lot of room to move about, but surely enough to sit on the rocks and renew the air in your lungs. The bouquet of this new oxygen will most surely be new to you and beneficial to your body.

The landscape is irresistible, so you should by no means leave your camera behind, you will obtain interesting shots with nothing to envy of other excursions’ images.

The amount of time you may render to this journey can vary greatly, it all depends on your taste and your spirit of adventure; but surely you will want to return and feel again that renewing energy flowing like the wind from the Cerro de la Bufa. Email to a friend
