Hotel Rosita – A Brief Review

By Jesús de Avila • Translation by Eduardo Rincón-Gallardo • September 2009

RositaAt a time when few imagined Puerto Vallarta becoming an icon of international tourism and its lodging offer therefore limited to rooms at private homes available to travelers, the vision of a man named Salvador González Gutiérrez, who founded the Hotel Rosita back in 1948 gave birth to the hospitality industry in Puerto Vallarta.

Initially only twelve rooms were built, they featured one or two beds each, a chair and a small dressing table with a mirror, and a bathroom. There was no electric power in town back then, so upon checking-in guests received a kerosene lamp to light up their room. Every room had a 200 liter water bin for the use of guests, without pipes.

Given the town’s context back then, the location of Hotel Rosita could hardly be worse, north of town and amid planted lots, next to the graveyard which is now Hidalgo Park, so everybody, Don Salvador’s close friends included, judged him mad and all foresaw an outright failure coming. Despite the above, Don Salvador never lost sight of his target and brought his great project to term.

Rosita It became the first facility where one could be lodged somewhat adequately, the Hotel Rosita was very well accepted, given the fact that growing numbers of visitors came to town, soon twelve more rooms were built. Slowly but surely the hotel also became a motor to the port’s development. The hotel already had one hundred rooms by 1970 and now it offers 113 comfortable rooms caressed daily by the shade of the stylish palm trees decorating its peaceful gardens; next to them there is a picturesque and typical restaurant very popular among locals and foreign residents.

The hotel continues to be family-operated, a fact that makes it a proud Vallartense tradition with a history of service of over fifty years actively participating in the port’s growth.

Rosita What began as a twelve-room building is now part of the Historic Center of Puerto Vallarta and it is one of the most significant and representative icons of our destination. Its founder, Don Salvador González Gutiérrez, a merry, hard-working and honorable man was known for always achieving his goals. He was born in Los Reyes, a municipality of beautiful San Sebastián del Oeste, Jalisco, on March 4th 1909; he married Doña Carmen Torres de González and formed a family consisting of four children and eleven grandchildren; he passed away on December 4th when he was 87 years old.

The present location of Hotel Rosita, considered lousy at its conception, simply cannot be beat, at the beginning of the “Malecón” at the northern gate to the town’s heart, it hosts the first great sculpture named “Millennium” at a magnificent spot to relax and admire Vallarta’s spectacular sunsets.
