In past installments, we’ve touched upon a number of the wonderful treatments available to visitors at the numerous spas in Puerto Vallarta – the most Mexican of all Mexico’s beach resorts.
All around the famous Bay of Banderas, there are luxurious spas in 5-star and Gran Turismo hotels, as well as numerous independent ones.
This month, we thought we would feature those all-too-often neglected parts of our body: our feet.
It has been estimated that we humans first stood upright about 1 million years ago – which would be when our feet took on a double load. Shoes (sandals made of animal skins) soon followed. But since those early times, shoes have more often been worn for status and style than comfort and function – despite the consequences. Although it nearly crippled them, years ago upper-class Chinese women bound their feet so they could wear tiny shoes - a sign of being well bred! Today's high heels are almost as rough on modern women's feet, so it's no surprise that 80% of all foot problems occur in women.
Don’t get us wrong. Men's feet haven't fared too well either. The stresses and inactivity of contemporary life often lead to obesity. And if those extra pounds weren't enough to make a pair of feet ache, the out-of-shape, weekend athlete doesn't always wear the right shoes for the right activity. The result, often as not, is a foot problem or two.
Fortunately, most foot problems can be prevented. The first thing to do is to just follow the Golden Rule: Be good to your feet and they'll be good to you.
Among the many treatments offered at the spas in Puerto Vallarta are foot massages, often accompanied by reflexology. If you haven’t experienced one yet, you would be amazed at the health benefits of a foot massage.
The oldest foot massage chain is called a Tibetan Herbal Feet Soak, whose origins come from various Asian cultures. Foot massage are very popular in China, but have become increasingly popular in North America.
The soaking base of an authentic Tibetan herbal foot soak contains more than 30 different herb extracts. The foot massage session that follows will help you exfoliate the dead skin layers and stimulate ancient reflexology points, thus relieving aching feet and stimulating the whole body in the process.
Traditional East Asian foot reflexology is called Zoku Shin Do (the foot portion of the Japanese massage technique). The roots of Zoku Shin Do go back to ancient China and are over 5000 years old.
Reflexology has far-reaching benefits for the body, mind and soul. Professional therapists expert in the application of the theory of reflexology, stimulate systematically nerve reflexes in the feet, and help to restore the balance and harmony of your body.
Be good to your feet for they are the only ones that can take you on your life’s journey.
• Wash them daily. Rinse off all soap and dry thoroughly, especially between toes.
• Trim the nails straight across, and not too short. Don't cut out or dig at corners.
• If you wear socks or stockings, change them daily. Don't wear any that are too tight.
• Wear shoes that fit.
Some people's feet sweat more than others, and are more prone to athlete's foot. These tips may help:
• Wear shoes made of leather or canvas - not synthetics. Sandals are good.
• Switch shoes from day to day.
• Use a good foot powder.
• And of course, use good judgment: See your doctor if severe problems persist.
And when you visit us in Puerto Vallarta or anywhere around the beautiful Bay of Banderas, treat yourself, treat your feet to a healthful, relaxing and invigorating foot massage –with or without reflexology- at one of our many wonderful spas. Email to a friend
