Three Golf Courses – One Destination
By Jesús de Avila • Translation by Eduardo Rincón-Gallardo • January 2012

Puerto Vallarta GolfDefinitely something in Puerto Vallarta that presently catches people's attention and greatly impresses everybody, besides its huge development focused on catering to the needs of a specific market in search of their retirement paradise, are its extraordinary championship golf courses. The simple fact of strolling through them while observing and enjoying their natural surroundings, is an excellent recreational activity and it is also enough proof that on the part of Club Corp International, its owners and operators, as in the world's most prestigious golf courses, there is a commitment to excellence, towards providing the best facilities and services as well as to organize and celebrate the most renowned international tournaments, through which they have efficiently contributed to the promotion of Puerto Vallarta as a top level golf destination.

The spectacular courses are definitely the reflection of a great infrastructure where hundreds of people work daily, with the purpose of guaranteeing the golfer an exciting and memorable playing experience.

  • The Golf Courses

Marina Vallarta Golf Club:
Located in the heart of the exclusive residential zone of Marina Vallarta, The Marina Vallarta Golf Club is an 18-hole, par 71 course designed by architect Joe Finger; built at sea level with narrow fairways on almost seven-thousand yards from the professional tees. It was inaugurated in 1989 and is probably the most challenging course for advanced golfers, as well as fun-filled and exciting to the casual golfer.

Puerto Vallarta GolfIn six of the first nine holes, the links feature lots of water as their main intimidating hazards; while on the second round, the wind coming from the sea raises the level of difficulty and on the par-threes you are playing against the wind. Another distinction of the Marina Vallarta Golf Club are its unleveled greens, an aspect that forces you into a detailed and careful analysis of ballistics and micrometric precision with your putter.

In its luxurious facilities the club-house features a restaurant-bar area with wide and exclusive panoramic terraces, the ideal place to hold pleasant social or business meetings. Its pro-shop offers a wide and updated selection of all that a golfer may need, including gear and shoe rentals.

Marina Vallarta Golf Club also has full-fledged practice facilities as well as bar service on the course.

Vista Vallarta - Jack Nicklaus Course:
Puerto Vallarta GolfA beautiful, professional 18-hole, par 72 course, designed on 7073 yards by legendary player and designer Jack Nicklaus. Inaugurated on April 1º 2001, it is located on the highest point of Vista Vallarta, at the foot of the majestic western Sierra Madre mountain range, offering impressing views of the Bay of Banderas and Puerto Vallarta. With its nearness to the mountains, the course challenges players with frequent level changes along its fairways; confronting them with dips at either-side and demanding precision in their strokes in order to stay at the center or on the clearest and forthright stroke positions to approach the greens.

Some of its par-threes are very long —a characteristic feature of its designer—, plus having placed sand traps right on the spaces where most aim their shots at. This beautiful golf course has presently become the first choice for a great number of golfers arriving to Puerto Vallarta. Well-seasoned golfers really enjoy playing here, while less-experiences ones, surrounded by abundant and exuberant nature become exhilarated at every stroke while discovering the course's magnificence and design.

Vista Vallarta - Tom Weiskopf Course:
Puerto Vallarta GolfOpen since November 1º 2001, it is located on the western side of Vista Vallarta, offering a dramatic contrast versus its neighboring golf course, since this one was built following a challenging design drafted on an extreme surface with thick and dense vegetation, crossed by winding brooks. This course, with its shorter and narrower fairways, challenges the golfer to a precision play through the trees, palm trees and meadows, typical of the lower terrain of this area. Steve Rocca —who writes for Travel Golf Mexico— comments that Tom Weiskopf —designer of the course— has achieved a master's degree in the utilization of the natural slopes and local environment, innovating in golf experience, highlighting the golf course as one that "stands alone on its own".

For all the design's characteristics, the golfer almost always has a clear view of the fairway up front, while the par-threes are quite challenging, with drops, brooks and hazards that stand as the main obstacles protecting the greens, a fact that again, requires a high degree of precision. This is a preferred course for those who enjoy playing with calm and concentration.

The facilities at Vista Vallarta Golf Club offer a driving range that can accommodate 75 golfers simultaneously, dressing rooms, parking lot, a deluxe club-house with restaurant-bar, ideal for organizing events and business meetings. Bar service is offered on the links and a well-stocked pro-shop as well.

Puerto Vallarta GolfTo most golfers arriving to the port, the fact Puerto Vallarta is a destination where they can play at three different golf courses, accessible just fifteen minutes from the downtown area is just fascinating. A vast majority of them plan their trips making sure they play at the three during their visit. It is important to note that, according to David Quiroz [golf professional at Vista Vallarta Club de Golf], an average of one hundred and twenty thousand green fees are played at the three golf courses a year.

The present real estate development in Puerto Vallarta, the Bay of Banderas and their surroundings; focused mainly on satisfying Baby Boomers' needs, to a great number of whom practicing golf is essential, forecasts that by the year 2011 the region will have fifteen championship golf courses; this projection assures us the demand will be covered with a high degree of quality, therefore contributing to make Puerto Vallarta stand out as a top-level golfing destination.
