| by John Gabruk November 17, 2002. |
Long
known as the world's richest billfish tournament, the Bisbee's Black & Blue
Marlin Jackpot Tournament ended on October 19th with three separate teams earning
over $400,000. USD. In all, 148 teams from Canada, Mexico, England, Italy, Panama,
the Turks & Caicos and almost all 50 of the United States competed for $1.672
million dollars in this 3-day event. The overall prize money was up from last
year due to the new All-Release Jackpot Division where for the first time in the
tournament's 22-year history, teams received cash awards for releasing billfish
($55,225. USD). The largest fish weighed was a 439-lb. Blue
Marlin caught early on day three by the "Picante Dream" a 35-ft. "Cabo
yacht", captained by Nayo Winkler. The angler was Hank Deviney from Houston,
Texas. His accompanying team members also from Texas were Greg and Cleon Almond
along with Steve Wilbur. The total purse was $470,420.00. The Picante charter
fleet is one of Cabo's finest charter operations, and is responsible for capturing
the largest marlin in the tournament's history in 1995 where the blue tipped the
scales at an incredible 993 lbs. The tournament's second
largest fish, a 418 lb. Black Marlin earned the largest purse of $486,530.00 due
to their entering all of the optional daily jackpot categories. It was caught
on the "Go Deep" by Washington angler, John Bullo one of the World Billfish
Series most successful anglers this year. Teammates included Bruce Bosley Jr.
from Washington and Jared Dow and Scott Pruner, both from Kailua-Kona, Hawaii.
The boat's captain is Gene VanderHoeck. Bruce Bosley is
the guy who won the World Billfish series world championship in Nuevo Vallarta
in December of 2001 aboard the "High Maintenance" (my boat, crew and
hubby). Part of his winnings was the entry fee into this tournament... Look what
he won! One pound separated the third largest fish that
weighed in at 417 lbs. This Blue Marlin was caught on the "RO.RA. III,"
a Mexican boat and team from Leon, Mexico that was captained by Carlos Godinez
Zepeda. This team was awarded $253,650.00. The angler was Hector Herrera accompanied
by fellow teammates were Rafael Herrera, Arturo Lopez and Marco Antonio Tamayo. Captain
Carlos is a local captain here in PV, he is 2 docks over. The mate, Arturo Lopez,
was the captain of the "Tonya Too" this past year. The
fourth largest fish received the third highest purse of $400,320. (due to entering
all of the optional daily jackpots) was caught by the "Rama III", captained
by Vigilio Labato from Cabo. The angler of this 408 lb. Blue Marlin was Ray
Novelli from CA. His teammates included family members Marlies and Robert Novelli
and Jaud Hussongs from Ensenada, Mexico. Also in the money
was the "Rantin' and Ravin'" with a 401-lb. Blue Marlin caught by Greg
Service of Vancouver, WA. This team earned $8,880. The
top release team was the "Royal Flush" with 3 Striped Marlin releases.
This was worth $33,930. to the team. Second place release went to "Fishers
of Men" winning $11,745. and third was "After Midnight" who received
$6,525. This year's Black & Blue was hosted by the
