They're
back. Finally the "Big Boys" are back. After
having a very good Sailfish season with non-stop action
on large Dorado, otherwise known as Mahi-Mahi, the time
has come that we have all been looking forward to, the
GIANT YELLOWFIN TUNA & BIG BLACK MARLIN ARE BACK!
The "High Maintenance" charter boat has been
having a great week. They have been going out and slaying
them everyday. The official count over the past 6 days;
14 Wahoo, 29 Dorado (Mahi-Mahi), 12 Tuna, 2 Black Marlin
and yesterday the first Giant Yellowfin of the season.
A monster taken on a live Skipjack with a 280-pound
Fluorocarbon leader.
The Bank is the hot spot accounting
for almost all the fish caught this week. If you are
going to go, don't get sold short and listen to someone
tell you the bay is good fishing to save money. Step
up and spend the money, this is your vacation; bring
your boat back full of fish to take home. Did you know
you are allowed 70 pounds of frozen filet per person
to the USA or Canada? All you need is a regular cooler
with no ice and no dry ice. You can freeze your catch
to take home at Master Baiter's Sportfishing & Tackle
Marina Vallarta location for only 25 pesos per gallon
Ziploc bag (provided). This way, all summer long you
can pull out a bag and re-live your vacation. It always
tastes better when you catch it yourself!
The Wahoo are wide open; troll hex
head lures, black & purple or blue & white,
medium size lures, fast! You will put 5 or 6 Wahoo on
the boat, fast. The bite shuts down about 10:00 am,
so get out there early. Most boats will leave early,
if you ask. If you want Wahoo, now is the time.
TRAVEL TIME IS VERY IMPORTANT! The
Tonya Too boat will travel to Corbetania in 1 ½
hours, the High Maintenance will take 1 ¾ hours,
many charter boats take 2 ½ to 3 ½ hours,
if you are getting a "great deal" on the price,
you will pay for it with hardly any fishing time. Approximate
fishing time, the Tonya Too will leave you 5 hours of
fishing, the High Maintenance will leave 4 ½
hours, with those "great deal" boats you will
have 1 to 3 hours fishing time in an 8 hour day. Even
if you talk them into giving you extra time, do you
want a boat ride or a fishing trip? Do the math.
Big Dorado will eat the same lures
as the Wahoo and they are all over; troll the edges
of bait schools for guaranteed Dorado. The "Bulls";
Bull Dorado are the large males, are running 15 to 25
kilos and the females 10 to 20 kilos, consistently.
Remember, on a Dorado hook-up, clear the lines fast
and you'll have a great chance of picking up another.
If not, get a live Google eye (cav) in the water and
you will have a double hook-up, the majority of the
time they are traveling in two's or schools. So, get
a bait out. Don't wait to have a live bait rod ready
until you're hooked up. "Have it ready"!
Black
Marlin, still the age-old dilemma, live bait or lures.
We have had one of each out this week with strikes and
lost fish equally on both. Typically if bait is around,
you want to fish bait, that's what they are eating.
But now, lures are doing great. Big lures are getting
bit the best off the short riggers and flat lines. I
personally like lure hooked Marlin, they go crazy and
the initial run is incredible although the hook-up ratio
isn't as good as live bait. I feel the excitement of
that first run is worth the risk, especially when it's
as wide open for the Big Blacks as it is right now,
it also makes a release much easier without cutting
the line and leaving a hook in it's gut. Live bait is
great, don't get me wrong, it's just a different kind
of fight. A lot of times, they don't jump. They stay
down and when you've caught as many as I have &
are getting more "mature" it's sometimes more
the visual than the physical, if you get my drift. If
you're into "catch & release" then you
definitely want to use lures. Live bait is swallowed
and your fish will most likely be stomach hooked which
makes it impossible to release without the potential
of killing the fish. Lures hook in the jaw, which will
almost always allow for a release, if you wish. If your
not going to eat it or mount it (taxidermy) why not
let it go & grow for your next fishing trip or that
of your children?
Now the scoop on the giants: the
first giant of the year was caught on High Maintenance
of the Master Baiter's Sportfishing & Tackle fleet,
was just shy of 250 pounds, a baby. Even so, it means
they are back and will be here for the next 6 months.
Live Skipjack & Yellow fins with Fluorocarbon are
your best bet for the Puerto Vallarta Giants. We are
looking to put the first 400-pound Yellowfin ever recorded
on a P.V. deck, this year! Soon it will be wide open
giants, keep reading and I will let you know.
If you would like to rent a charter
boat and know exactly what you are getting then stop
into either MASTER BAITER'S SPORTFISHING & TACKLE
locations: Downtown on Morelos Street #164 tel/22-27239
or Marina Vallarta, when facing the water 3 doors to
your right if the lighthouse tel/20-90498. You will
receive an accurate description and the right boat,
crew and equipment for what you want to catch. You can
freeze, smoke or mount (stuff) your catch to take home.
Their company owned boats (Including the "High
Maintenance" who is the winner of the WORLD CHAMPION
TEAM award 2 years in a row!) offer you a money back
guarantee, that you catch a game fish, that's how confident
they are. If you are just 1 or two people then ask about
sharing a boat. As our famous T-shirts say "We
won't jerk you around"
