FISHING REPORT

"Fishing Frenzy"
#41 Weekly Fishing Report

by: John Gabruk
June 24, 2002.

Warm blue waters here in Puerto Vallarta, and along with that and the first rains, every game fish known to these waters - giant yellowfin tuna, school yellowfins, black marlin, wahoo, dorado, and sailfish are all offshore now, right here in our bay!

The season started late but it has hit with a bang and now it's pick-a-fish time, just pick out what type of fish you are looking for and go get it. That's right, you can target a particular species and get it now. Some baits or lures will attract multiple types of fish. For example , if you want a 60- to 80-lb. dog tooth snapper, using the down rigger at Corbeteñia with mono leader trolled near the rock will maximize your chances to nail one of these prehistoric snappers. If you get a strike but don't hook up and your bait has been mangled, it's a dog tooth snapper! Don't be surprised if when targeting snapper you pick up a wahoo or black marlin , they are eating the same stuff.

The giant yellowfin are back. On Wednesday, 2 giants over 300 pounds each hit the docs on local charter boats, a 300-lb. yellowfin will put a hurting on you that you only think you want... Puerto Vallarta GIANTS make grown men cry. If you are thinking about giving up, just remember, Tonya Gabruk, married to the local fishing legend John Gabruk (me), hooked and boated a 286-lb. giant last year unassisted, so never give up! The opportunity to be in the 300-lb. club is elusive and only shared by a select number of anglers. Here in PV you could join the list, but not if you hand it off, no wimps and no cry babies here.

Remember, fluoro carbon leader, 200- to 300-lb. test will work the best for the giants. Big black marlin are being hooked in great numbers but only a few are making it to leader (side of the boat) lines breaking, reels spooled, and rods breaking. The marlin right now are big and mean. Lures and live bait are still about equal as far as what's producing hook-ups, so if you're not getting bit change over or ask the captain or crew to change, they won't be offended.

Master Baiter's Sportfishing official count this week is: 3 black marlin, 1 giant yellowfin tuna 332 pounds, approximately 70 20- to 70-lb. yellowfins and 27 wahoo. That's the main focus although 4 sails and 18 dorado where caught as well. They have been here for a while. The big news is the big fish! So get out now if you want one of these PV giants!

If you would like to rent a charter boat and know exactly what you are getting, then stop into either MASTER BAITER'S Sportfishing & Tackle locations: Downtown at 164 Morelos street, tel.: 222-7239 or in Marina Vallarta when facing the water 3 doors to your right of the lighthouse, tel.: 209-0498. You will receive an accurate description and the right boat, crew and equipment for what you want to catch.

You can freeze, smoke, or mount your catch to take home. Their company owned boats (including the High Maintenance - the winner of the World Billfish Series award 2 years in a row!) offer a money back guarantee that you will catch a game fish, that's how confident they are! If you are just 1 or two people, then ask about sharing a boat. Ask for our famous "We won't jerk you around!" T-shirts and check out the incredible new models that just arrived… You're gonna flip!
