FISHING REPORT

"Fishing Frenzy"
#42 Weekly Fishing Report

by: John Gabruk
June 26, 2002.

It's going off right now here in Puerto Vallarta, GIANT YELLOWFIN TUNA ARE THICK at Corbetania and they are big. This week 14 giants over 200 pounds hit the decks of local charter boats. The largest caught on the "Tonya Too", a 29-foot center console, owned by Master Baiter's Sportfishing & Tackle. This giant weighed in at a whopping 362 pounds, caught by a Houston Texas Bluefin tuna fisherman and took 2 hours and 47 minutes to get on the deck. Yellowfin tuna will "KICK YOUR ASS", not many people have the technique, strength or endurance to land one of these monsters on their own. Not so for owner of "Proteam Sportfishing", Rodney Caughman, charter fleet owner and number one ranked charter service in Mazatlan Mexico. This long term Mexico fisherman and I.G.F.A. representative for Mazatlan knows fishing and knows if you want 300 pound plus Yellowfin, Puerto Vallarta is the best place in the world to hook one of them up. And… that's just what he did. Rodney set out to Corbetania again on "Tonya Too" to nail a Tuna 200 pounds plus. He has many Tuna over 100 pounds under his belt but had yet to hit that magic 200 pound mark but that was about to end. What he got was much more than he had hoped for. Owning his own charter service, Rodney feels very comfortable fishing with his own Captain and he brought him along as the mate.

After catching bait, 2 small Yellowfins and 2 Skipjack, they slowed down and set all four out. 2 long rigger, 1 short rigger and 1 down rigger. 15 minutes after setting the lines a giant boil, then the shirt rigger snapped hard and the Shimano 50 was screaming as Rodney raced to the rod at what was obviously a Tuna at least as big as he had set out for. His Captain, a deckhand for the day, hooked him into the stand-up gear as Captain Arturo gunned the boat to ensure a good, deep hook set. This giant ripped off approximately 300 yards of 100-pound test Izorline at 28 pounds of drag, then she went down. Captain Arturo and "Tonya Too" came around to pick up as much line as possible from the initial run. After that, the grueling fight was on. Rodney got the Tuna within 10 feet of the leader 3 times and each time the fish freaked as it saw the boat and took off, one time pulling Rodney to the rail. In 1 hour & 20 minutes, the fish was in the boat, a 303-pound giant Yellowfin Tuna. Way to go Rodney, your style & technique landed this monster in half the time most 300 plus pound fish take. You also did it with a 50, not an 80 pound rod & reel which again proves… It's not how big the rod is, it's how you use it!

Big Black Marlin are also at Corbetania in very good numbers. If you want a big Black, get out now! Fluoro Carbon leaders are a must for big Tuna and they eat it fast, but won't eat mono as a rule. So, if it's a Black Marlin you want, go with a mono leader to give the Marlin a chance. Small Tuna or Skipjack slow trolled live are producing the majority of hook-ups. Friday when I was out and we were catching bait, I put out a medium size "Wild lure", black & purple for Wahoo and hooked & released an approximately 500 pound Black Marlin. So, do what feels comfortable to you. But… Get out there now!

The Bank is wide open also if you are looking for Sailfish or Dorado or 50 to 70 pound Tuna. Put out a Google Eye on a short rigger or center rigger and put some food on the boat.

Remember, it's hot out there now. Bring sunglasses, hat & sunscreen. Also, stop into Master Baiter's Sportfishing & Tackle and pick-up a "Polar" stay cool neck or head band. It will cool you off all day and they last for a year! On a fishing scale of 1 to 5 (5 being the best), I give P.V. a 4.5 fishes. Till next week, see you on the water. Good luck & best fishes!!!

If you would like to rent a charter boat and know exactly what you are getting then stop into either MASTER BAITER'S SPORTFISHING & TACKLE locations: Downtown on Morelos Street #164 tel/22-27239 or Marina Vallarta, when facing the water 3 doors to your right of the lighthouse tel/20-90498. You will receive an accurate description and the right boat, crew and equipment for what you want to catch. You can freeze, smoke or mount (stuff) your catch to take home or weigh it I.G.F.A. style. Their company owned boats Tonya Too and including the "High Maintenance" who is the winner of the WORLD CHAMPION TEAM award 2 years in a row! offer you a MONEY BACK GUARANTEE, that you CATCH a game fish, that's how confident they are. If you are just 1 or two people then ask about sharing a boat. As our famous T-shirts say "We won't jerk you around"
