Puerto
Vallarta is being invaded by giants, that's right "Tuna
Fans"! The giants are back in a big way. As always
fluorocarbon leaders will make the difference. 300-pound
works very well, it has the abrasion resistance, in
case you get bit by a big Black Marlin. It also has
low visibility that will get you bit by the Giant Yellowfin.
I'll get back to the giants in a minute.
The rain has finally arrived
and along with it the fishing has turned on. Dorado
can be caught inside the bay at the edges of the muddy
water-clear water breaks. School-size Tuna can also
be caught in the same area running 10 to 20 pounds.
Sierra Mackerel are all over the entrance of the bay
on the side of Punta Mita. Sailfish have started to
show inside the bay also.
Big
Black Marlin are at both Corbetania & the Bank.
The reason I refer to the Black Marlin as big, which
I do frequently, is because the average Black Marlin
caught in Puerto Vallarta will generally weigh in at
550 pounds. Blue Marlin are also here now in good numbers
but they tend to run smaller, approximately 300 to 400
pounds. Tonya Too, a local charter boat, accounted for
2 Blacks and 2 Blue Marlin this week. The 2 Blue Marlin
were both taken on medium size "bleeding mackerel"
color lures, 1 "Wild" and 1 "eat me"
brand. Blue Marlin aren't caught in these waters with
the same consistency as the Blacks but a lure hook Blue
will put on a show of a lifetime. Both clients that
caught the Blues said watching them jump was one of
the most exciting things of their life. Most Marlin
fishing around here is done with live bait. It's easy
and very productive but a deeply hooked baited Marlin
doesn't put on the same show that a lure hooked Marlin
will. Most charter Captains don't troll lures to keep
the fuel cost down but if you can get your Captain to
troll lures, you'll have a very productive & eventful
trip. Check to make sure the boat you are chartering
has a good stock of quality lures prior to booking.
Now back to the Giant Yellowfins.
With the arrival of the rain and the Tuna Sainer boats
leaving, the Giant Yellowfin are back in excellent numbers.
Tonya Too, El Amo and Strike One have boated numerous
Giants in excess of 300 pounds this week. They tend
to eat live bait better than lures. Small Tuna and Skipjack
are usually what will get you bit by the Giant Yellowfins.
This week they have opted to eat Goggle Eyes and small
Bullet Tuna. So, if your not getting bit with one type
of bait, switch up cause they seem to be changing their
eating habits. If your looking for Giant Yellowfin Tuna
& your dream is to catch a Tuna over 300 pounds,
the opportunity to make your dream a reality is now.
