What's
up fishing fans? Back with another update on Puerto
Vallarta Sportfishing. Fishing is great in PV now, just
like it's been for the past two months as far as Tuna
and Marlin. But, this week we have a few additions to
what's been added to the daily catches. Sailfish, Dorado
and Roosterfish are in and outside the bay. Inside the
bay, trolling 6 to 7 knotts, skipping dead Mullets behind
the boat will bring up the Sails. Live bait works great
with PV Sails but you just can't troll fast enough with
Google Eyes to cover enough ground. While trolling dead
bait on the other hand covers a lot of area, then when
you do hook up switch to live bait and work the area
for sure hook ups. If you are in a sporting mood and
want to get the most enjoyment out of a Sailfish, drop
down to 20 to 50 lb test equipment or use a spinning
reel (coffee grinder) and you will be in for an incredible
fight. Sails tend to jump like crazy when they don't
have too much pressure on them. Small Dorado 7 to 15
lbs and school size Tuna 10 to 20 lbs (footballs) can
also be caught inside the bay in the same area. Most
of the action is on the Punta Mita side of the bay.
Small dead Mullets, small squid jigs and Tuna Feathers
will do the trick for both. Along the sandy beach you
will find Roosterfish, Roosterfish are a very cool looking
and great fighting fish. If you can get them to actually
eat the bait. Roosters are some of the most aggravating
, frustrating fish in the ocean. They will chase the
bait, but it's very hard to get them to eat the bait.
So, use some Google Eyes or try medium Rapalas and small
speeder Marauders. Good luck!
Now for the big stuff, Giant Yellowfin
tuna and Black Marlin are at both Corbetania and the
Bank and it's stuffed. The way to pick up the Giant
Yellowfin now is on the downrigger, Marlin and Tuna
both only spend approximately 10% of the time on the
surface. So, to maximize your chances, GO DOWN! The
only problem is that most downriggers come standard
with a lead ball. NO GOOD! The drag puts the ball so
far back off the boat, at 90 feet, you have approximately
45 feet back and 45 feet down. Try a product called
Z WING. They come in two different styles, one for slow
and one for fast trolling. In addition, they have 3
settings to control depth and drop back ratio. At the
max depth setting, at 90 feet, it's about 75 feet of
depth and 15 feet back ratio. That will put the bait
where you want it, down. Light weight, they are easy
to retrieve and made of plastic (weighted) to ensure
if it hits your boat on the retrieve, no damage. They
have a wing shape that I use on my charter boats, you
will love them. But, ball or Z Wing, one thing for sure,
you will have a much more enjoyable trip if you GO DOWN!
