FISHING REPORT

"Fishing Frenzy"
#48 Weekly Fishing Report

by John Gabruk
August 26, 2002.

Good news! Last week is over and done with! Green / Red water outside the bay last week had marlin and giant yellowfin come to a screaming halt. The good news is, that's in the past!

The blue water is back, and so are both the Marlin and Giant Tunas, I'll get to them in a minute.

Sailfishing has been great the past 3 weeks, trolling dead ballyhoo has been the most productive way of nailing sailfish. Although this is a very hard bait to find, Master Baiter's tackle store has a limited supply, so if you want sailfish, pick some up the day prior to your trip and keep them on ice, or insist that your charter captain have some on the boat for you! Just about anything out there will get turned on to a slowly trolled dead ballyhoo…

Dead mullets and medium size lures will also bring up the sails, but nothing does the job like ballyhoo. The "Tonya Too" got 14 sails to leader this week, releasing 11 and mounting 3.

Rooster fish can be caught in good numbers along just about any sandy beach area along with pargo, up to 40 lbs, just past the surf line. Marauders and yo zuri hydro mags and large to medium rapalas are what's working as far as lures go, but google eyes live, slow trolled, seem to be accounting for the majority of the hook-ups.

So don't leave it up to luck, get those outriggers full, and try everything! You never know what you are going to get so every inch -and every bit- of equipment counts, like on the yellowfin tunas. It may seem as if I were overstating this, but if you are still skeptical about using fluoro carbon leaders, you're just gonna see them at the dock, hanging on someone else's boat.

Also, when you're renting a charter, you are renting the captain and every inch of equipment on that boat, so don't be afraid to ask them what are they using. The tackle always makes a huge difference when you are fighting a 700-lb black marlin. You certainly would not enjoy watching the line snap on you just 3 feet away from you, and that can be avoided if you make sure they switch the line often and check the gear before you leave the dock, especially when the blacks are back at the bank, and so are the giant tunas. It's like Banderas' break is over, and here we go again... Speaking about coming back, guess who's back in town?... And I am not talking about just any boat here, I am talking about the "High Maintenance", the world-renowned vessel, one of the most respected charter boats recently crowned at the World Billfish Series! Yes, Captain Steve and Mate Oscar are back, and as the tuna and the marlin are showing up in big numbers, I bet these two guys are not gonna be the exception this year… Maybe they'll even bring in a world record… maybe. So let's get fishy and start making some noise!

If you would like to rent a charter boat and know exactly what you are getting then stop into either Master Baiter's Sportfishing & Tackle locations: Downtown at 164 Morelos Street, tel.: 222-7239 or in Marina Vallarta when facing the water 3 doors to your right of the light house, tel.: 209-0498. You will receive an accurate description and the right boat, crew and equipment for what you want to catch, …and you can freeze, smoke or mount your catch to take home!
