September is starting out to be
the best month of the year, as always. Everyone has
been standing around the docks, waiting for things to
calm down. The hurricane off Cabo San Lucas had created
a strong southeasterly current along with huge waves.
And
the fishing fleet wasn't able to get outside
of the bay until yesterday. The rain from the previous
night knocked down the swells and the ocean was like
glass. The water was a deep, deep blue
and hot!
The sky was slightly overcast and the bait was all over
Corbetaña and the Bank had the monsters lurking
below for a Skipjack with a hook in it for breakfast
or lunch.
"Tonya Too" and
"El Amo" went out in tandem early to Corbetaña
still not knowing how the wave and weather conditions
would be; they were pleasantly surprised when they saw
that the ocean was flat. They cranked it up and ran
to Corbetaña passing four schools of Tuna 20
to 40 pounds. They were looking to hook into what traditionally
rules the water of Puerto Vallarta in September: Huge
Black Marlin & Giant Yellowfin Tuna! Upon arrival
at Corbetaña at approximately 8:00 a.m., the
birds were up and diving into numerous bait schools.
The crews got the bait catchers in the water and both
boats hooked up on bait their first pass under the birds.
"Tonya Too" put
two long and one on the downrigger and started out to
the Bank. Three-quarters of a mile out to a huge school
of birds and a proven Giant Yellowfin hang out, their
plan came to a screaming halt or a screaming reel I
should say. The down rigger rod went off and three seconds
later a 680-pound Black Marlin was dancing along the
top of the water at about 40 mph as Captain Freddy gunned
the boat, then turned to pick up line. Off to the port
side of "Tonya Too" a cloud of black smoke
and "El Amo" was gunning their engines with
their own 500-lb plus Black Marlin hooked up off the
shirt rigger. Both fish were released at the side of
the boat.
"Tonya Too" hooked another
Black Marlin, two Sailfish and boated a 240-lb Giant
Yellowfin. "El Amo" hooked two more Black
Marlin, releasing one and fighting the other for four
hours before it spit the hook. Seen jumping the estimated
weight was 800 pounds plus, but because it was a fish
estimated by fisherman it was probably closer to 700
pounds. Not much else to report due to the hurricane
but things are looking great for September. I'm going
out on "High Maintenance" tomorrow, I'll let
you know how I do, with pictures as proof!
This week Dennis Braid of Braid
Products is in Puerto Vallarta, he is reportedly staying
at his sponsor hotel, Villa del Palmar during his weeklong
stay. Dennis Braid is filming a video on Puerto Vallarta
Giant Yellowfin Tuna fishing aboard the "High Maintenance",
a 34 Luhrs owned by Master Baiter's Sportfishing &
Tackle. Dennis Braid tops the list of "Who's Who"
in stand-up Tuna fishing. Not to mention, the manufacturer
of numerous quality fishing products such as harnesses,
jigs, tuna rods, complete stand-up gear just to mention
a few. His last video, Atlantic Giants, "The Ultimate
Blue fin" is now being marketed by the largest
fishing video company. I heard it will be available
in Wal-Mart soon. Welcome, Dennis!
Directly following Dennis Braid's
trip is the arrival of "Team Seeker" who will
also be fishing aboard the "High Maintenance"
for Seeker Fishing Rods. After both John & Tonya
Gabruk broke the records for Men & Ladies largest
Tuna catch on a Seeker Rod, they are here to see what
all the commotion is about in Vallarta Tuna fishing.
Welcome, Dimitrio! We all wish we had your job.

CATCHING, not just fishing. MASTER BAITER'S SPORTFISHING
& TACKLE has something for every price range and
need! Don't forget, speed is very important. You need
to know how long it will take to get to your fishing
grounds. Some boats take 1-½ hours to arrive
at Corbetaña and others up to 3 hours, so be
sure of what you are renting. And be sure the line is
newly changed so you actually can boat what you've caught.
We'll help you in choosing the right trip for your needs.
