FISHING REPORT

"Fishing Frenzy"
#51 Weekly Fishing Report

by John Gabruk
September 16, 2002.

Back again with another update on Puerto Vallarta's hottest commodity, offshore bluewater sportfishing and things are going off right now. Black and Blue Marlin are at the Bank. Yesterday, the 9th, High Maintenance, a 35-foot Luhrs Sportfisher, owned by Master Baiter's Sportfishing and Tackle, headed out to Corbetania at 5:30 am with Dennis and Teresa Braid. Braid offshore Tackle, owned by Dennis & Teresa, is one of the leading offshore tackle manufacturers in the industry. They went in search of Giant Yellowfin Tuna and Black & Blue Marlin. They were accompanied by Danny Jackson, the famous cameraman and video editor, to ensure the video the Braid's are making on Puerto Vallarta's Giant Yellowfin Tuna along with Black & Blue Marlin is one of the best quality possible.

Upon arrival at Corbetania, the water was blue green, not bad but not the blue blue water that is usually dominant at this time of the year. We put some baits out and trolled approximately 1 hour. Bait (Skipjacks) were all over the place but no sign of Tuna and Marlin just don't like off-color water. Captain Steve, up in tower saw a blue water break line about 4 miles outside. So, after a brief discussion, the lines were pulled in and off to The Bank (El Banco). We went looking for bluewater and monsters.

Four miles out, the water turned deep blue and stayed that way for the additional nine miles we were traveling to The Bank. The bait was up and while putting out the bait catchers we saw two large Marlin jumping and we knew we had made the right decision in running the additional 13 miles out.

Teresa Braid, looking for a World Record Yellowfin on 50 pound test, put out (or the deckhand did) two Skippies, one long and one on the downrigger. Five minutes later, the downrigger went off but the Marlin didn't eat the bait. But, it did come up and follow the bait on the long rigger. This was a big fish and was clearly visible to Captain Steve on the Fly bridge. It never ate the bait, only followed it for five minutes, then went away to everyone's amazement.

Ten minutes later, the long rigger went off and Teresa was hooked up to a 350-pound Black Marlin dancing across the surface, ripping line off her reel as it did. Twenty minutes later, the fish was at the side of the boat being released by Captain Steve and we were headed back to the spot for more bait and more fish.

This time, in addition to the two baits on the 50-pound lines, Dennis put out a dead Skipjack on a 120lb-outfit on the short rigger. Fifteen minutes later Teresa's long rigger went off again, this time a 300-pound Blue Marlin. While Dennis was clearing his 120-pound rig, a 600 plus Black Marlin came up and swallowed the dead bait. He had a double hook-up on Marlin. This is a very touchy situation. Big Marlin like this, when hooked two at a time, may go the same way, but typically split and it's close to impossible to land both fish. Not this time, due to Captain Steve's experience with double hook ups and the experience and skill of the Braids, both fish came to the side of the boat and released. Way to go guys! We can't wait to see what is caught today and then the video. I know it's going to be a tremendous boost to Puerto Vallarta's Sportfishing.
