Nothing
but good things to report this week. Calm blue warm
water jam packed with all the hottest game fish, such
as Dorado, Wahoo, Giant Pargo, Sailfish, Black &
Blue Marlin and Giant Yellowfin Tuna can all be caught
here and now in Puerto Vallarta.
The BIG NEWS is El Banco, the past
week most of the big stuff has been caught at El Banco.
Saturday, I personally went out on the High Maintenance
and things went great from the start. The first thing
that made it to the gaff was a 75 pound piece of driftwood
that my wife Tonya saw floating and is now a decoration
in our living room at home. Then out went the bait catchers
and the first one caught a 6 to 7 pound Tuna that was
eaten about 15 feet from the back of the boat by a huge
Black Marlin. As it ate the Tuna, it jumped and scared
the shi_ out of everyone in the cockpit. Then spooled
a Shimano TLD 20 with 40 pound test line on it in about
4 seconds and never even thought about stopping.
The Marlin were there and obviously
hungry! We put out 4 baits and just as the last one
went on the downrigger, the short rigger snapped and
started ripping off line. Tonya yelled "Don't touch
it, it's mine"! After being married 6 years, I
know how to follow a "friendly suggestion",
so I stayed away! After feeding the Marlin about 5 more
seconds, she locked the break and yelled, "Hit
it" to Captain Steve. As the line came tight, Tonya
started swinging on it like Babe Ruth, setting the hook.
I helped Tonya get into her stand up gear, a harness
and rod belt manufactured by Braid Offshore Tackle and
given to Tonya by Dennis & Teresa Braid 2 weeks
ago while they were filming a video. Tonya was on the
rail switching from high to low gear and back again
for 1 hour and 20 minutes before a 450 pound plus Blue
Marlin came to leader and was released. Great job Tonya
on the catch and the release. The trip produced 1 more
Marlin, a black about the same size, a sight casted
Sailfish and ½ a dozen 30 to 50 pound Yellowfin
Tuna. Two privately owned boats had about the same type
of results but I'm not sure of the exact number.
Monday,
Captain Steve was back out to the Bank along with Bill
Winters and friend Bill Collins. Bill Winters is a well
respected, internationally known Marlin fisherman who
has traveled the world looking to break the world record
for Black or Blue Marlin, coming close with several
1,000 pound plus fish of both species. They started
on what looked to be the beginning of a beautiful day.
As they left the bay, things started to get rough and
by the time they got to the Bank things had turned nasty.
This bunch of diehards put out some baits despite the
stormy conditions and tried to ignore the increasingly
unsavory conditions, to no avail. The weather continued
to worsen and the waves grew larger and larger until
they were forced to start heading home. The clinically
insane deckhand Oscar thought that since the sea conditions
were so bad that they couldn't run and had to head up
swell, that this would be the perfect time to troll
some lures. Captain Steve, concentrating on what was
happening up front, didn't notice lures were out until
a big Blue Marlin grabbed one and the alarm went off
on the Shimano 80. Capt. Steve freaked out calling Oscar
crazy as Oscar cleared the lines while Bill Winters
grabbed the rod setting the hook. Twenty minutes later
the Marlin spit the lure. While Steve wasn't looking
Oscar laughingly put out 2 more lures and the same thing
happened. This time, a 120 pound Sailfish. All is well
that ends well, and at the dock everyone had a good
laugh, high fives, and beers. Even Captain Steve settled
down and joined the celebration. Way to go diehards!
