FISHING REPORT

"Fishing Frenzy"
#53 Weekly Fishing Report

by John Gabruk
September 30, 2002.

If you have ever dreamed about catching a Black or Blue Marlin, you can make that dream a reality in Puerto Vallarta, now.

Corbetañia has provided about a dozen Black & Blue Marlin this week with many fish lost. That's a great number when considering only 14 charter boats fished Corbetañia this week. Giant Yellowfin Tuna have been seen jumping and a few were hooked but lost. The reason for the low amount of strikes and hook-ups is that they are eating squid. For the past two weeks, there has been an abundance of squid and the Tuna have been gorging themselves. That won't last; soon the skipjack along with small Tuna will be the food of choice. When that happens and it should be this upcoming week, things will break wide open for the giants again.

It's been a strange year throughout Mexico, especially here in Puerto Vallarta. The water stayed green much longer than normal. Usually the water is green outside (the Bank - Corbetañia) from March until May - which is no problem for Sailfish and Dorado. Those are the primary targeted fish during those months and very successful, I might add. This year the water cleared up June and half way through July, then green again! What's up with that? That lasted until the first week of October and still wasn't blue-blue until mid-October. The water also stayed cold much longer, hopefully this means the season will last into December or January. But, that's all over now and the water is perfect, the seas are calm, no storms in sight & the bite is on. So, get to Master Baiter's Sportfishing & Tackle to book your charter, now.

Huge Dorado are everywhere outside of the bay. Troll some dead Mullets or medium size lures for numerous hooks-ups. The bulls have been averaging 50 pounds and many 65 to 70 pounders have been boated this week. A 64-inch Dorado is an amazing looking animal and will put an incredible display jumping, along with a tremendous fight on 50-pound gear. The Bank again, is the hottest spot. Very few boats, lots of bait along with multiple hook-ups on numerous types of game fish.

WAHOOOOO! The Wahoo are also back. This incredibly hard hitting, elusive speedster that cannot be mistaken for any other fish at strike or initial run, has returned in strong numbers. Wahoo is an excellent eating fish (my personal favorite), not to mention a very fun fish to catch. While trolling bait catchers put out a couple of "Braid" marauders in the prop wash and you have an excellent chance of putting a couple Wahoo in the boat prior to putting out baits for the big stuff. The Wahoo are averaging 60 to 80 pounds, a good size Wahoo in anyone's book.

If you are looking for your first Billfish, a Giant Yellowfin or your personal best of any game fish, Puerto Vallarta can provide a chance you may ever have, right now. Then, have your trophy fish mounted through Grey's Taxidermy, the world's largest marine taxidermist. Avoid local mounts by Montadores del Pacifico, who unfortunately have to kill Billfish to mount them and has a reputation of never delivering your mount. Also, when questioned will shift blame and deny responsibility. I personally have been burned 3 times by them and I know of many others who have been also. Grey's does an excellent job, has done business in Mexico for numerous years without any reports of non-delivery or unsatisfied customers. Based in Florida, you also avoid the substantial import duty, something that is not mentioned in the Montadores del Pacifico contract. By all means, mount your fish, just don't get burned, mount through Grey's Taxidermy. You can see the difference in quality at Master Baiter's Sportfishing & Tackle, Marina Vallarta store, they have both. Just looking out for my readers.

For all your fishing tackle, charter boats, shared charters or half day, freezing your catch, certifying world records or if you just want to know what's going on, CALL TONYA'S FISHING HOTLINE cellular # 044-322-29-40521 or stop by one of our stores: In MARINA VALLARTA, tel.: 209-0498, 3 doors from the lighthouse when facing the water, or DOWNTOWN at 164 Morelos Street, tel.: 222-7239. You'll get an accurate description of fishing charter boats available for rent and quality CATCHING, not just fishing. MASTER BAITER'S SPORTFISHING & TACKLE has something for every price range and need! Don't forget, speed is very important. You need to know how long it will take to get to your fishing grounds. Some boats take 1-½ hours to reach Corbetaña and others up to 3 hours, so be sure of what you are renting. Be sure the line is newly changed so you actually can boat what you've caught. We'll help you in choosing the trip for your needs. Master Baiter's Sportfishing & Tackle's company-owned boats offer a MONEY BACK GUARANTEE CATCH and besides, "We won't jerk you around!"
