FISHING REPORT

"Fishing Frenzy"
#56 Weekly Fishing Report

by John Gabruk
November 4, 2002.

Before we get into the fishing report I would like to say THANK YOU to everyone who has called, e-mailed (just re-established service today) and was concerned, we appreciate you! We are fine, there were no deaths from the hurricane. It was very strange as I never closed my windows during the hurricane, it wasn't necessary. Marina Vallarta was not affected nor were the boats in MARINA VALLARTA. There was no rain. What did happen was HUGE waves crashed onto land, taking a lot with them. Our downtown location was completely washed out to sea (no insurance). All in all we did well. 1 day later and business was back to normal. The cleanup around here is amazing. It may ahve something to do with the big PGA tour coming in December. President Fox announce he wants Vallarta back to the way it was by Dec 1st. I think they will be WAY AHEAD OF SCHEDULE! Thank you for caring.

Tuna Tonya

Back again after a week of big waves and now big fish. Hurricane Kenna definitely left it's mark on Puerto Vallarta. The town & people will bounce back. Soon things will be back to normal. Kenna also brought warm blue water and big Black Marlin. Tuesday and Wednesday, Tonya Too had big luck with big Blacks. Releasing five, the largest estimated at 660 lbs. Lures proved to be the bait of choice this week. Tuesday, after spending 2/3 of the day slow trolling Skippies with floro carbon leaders without any strikes; Captain Freddy and Mate Victor changed to lures. Five minutes later the first strike of the day, a 400 lb Black swallowed a large "Black Bart" and was released in 45 minutes. Two more Marlin strikes on large lures, one spitting the hook and the other a 650 lb plus, released in 2 hours and 15 minutes.

Dorado can be found just outside of the bay and can be picked up with small to medium lures of any color. El Morro and the surrounding area has trees, logs and who knows what else floating that will guarantee Dorado hook-ups from 20 to 50 lbs. Always have a live bait casting rod rigged and handy. Dorado usually travel in at least pairs and sometimes schools. So, be ready & get another bait out.

Sailfish can be picked up at the same area trolling dead Mullets and medium size lures. Black and purple and petroleros seem to be producing the most strikes. While trolling dead bait or lures, have at least one daisy chain of pink mold craft squid as a teaser! Sailfish can't resist popping up behind them. Have a pitch bait ready and when you see a Sailfish slashing at the teaser pitch the bait back as the deckhand pulls the teaser toward the boat. The Sail will immediately break away from the teaser and devour a dead Mullet pitch back bait.

FINALLY, the Tuna are back! The bank right now is stuffed with Yellowfin ranging from 80 to 350 lbs plus. The bait you'll be using is based on the size of Tuna you are looking for. The smaller 80 to 120 lbs are eating Goggle Eyes and medium size lures. The big boys, 200 plus are looking for slow trolled live Skipjacks and small Tuna. Also, all sizes can be picked up by trolling pink "Mold Craft" squids rigged with double hooks off the long rigger, way back. If you think it's too long, drop it back another 20 feet and that's where you want to be.

Wahoo are being taken regularly at Corbetania and the Bank. If you get out early, it's worth the time to troll some "Braid" marauders in close, "Yozuri" hydro magnums or large black and purple tuna feathers long. All in all, the fishing is great in Puerto Vallarta and should stay that way throughout November. I'm going out myself tomorrow. I hear the Giants are back and I'm looking to get a sore back. I'll let you know how it goes, see you next week.

It's time to break out the new gear, the Club de Pesca is holding the annual fishing tournament, November 21, 22 & 23. This year will be an exceptional turnout!
