FISHING REPORT

"Fishing Frenzy"
#57 Weekly Fishing Report

by John Gabruk
November 10, 2002.

Tuna time, the tuna are back in any size you want! Ya know writing a weekly fishing report here in Puerto Vallarta is sometime challenging. Not because I have to walk to the docks and find out what's going on and where, if anything. It's how to put into print the different ways to say that Puerto Vallarta is wide open! And, that's the way it is right now.

Tuna is at the top of the list, as many 80 to 100 pound tuna as you want. After getting that out of your system, drop down a skippy about 90 feet, put a couple on your long riggers and get ready because the big boys are back and it's about time. After a "here today, gone tomorrow" season of Giant Yellowfin along with blue water, it seems like they are here to stay, at least through November. The 80 to 100 pounders will mostly be eating 5 to 9 inch lures, they are a bit finicky and will change color preferences from day to day (anyone who says fish are color blind, is crazy or has never fished). Black & purple one day, the nest day only bright colors. The change in preference is not due to the weather conditions, bright & sunny with blue water daily but still the color does make a difference. The giants are eating live bait.

The Bank is the hot spot now and wahoo will also be picked up while trolling lures for medium size tuna early. The wahoo seem to be shutting down at around 10:00 am and most definitely done by 11:00 am. So, lures are a good way to go early if you want some fast & furious action, not to mention some of the best food fish you can imagine!

Marlin are being caught in good numbers at Corbetania & the Bank this week, even though not the primary target. 9 black and 4 blue marlin between 4 boats that fished for the giants & marlin with live bait. I love that about Puerto Vallarta, put out some big live baits and 3 to 4 different species; all big, could end up eating the bait.

On a completely different note, the annual Pez Vela Tournament (sailfish) is just around the corner. The turn out this year is expected to break the records. Numerous Automobiles & prizes will be awarded. Tonya and I will be fishing and totally expect to drive away from the awards banquet this year. If you have never fished the PV Sailfish tournament held by the Club de Pesca November 21st, 22nd & 23rd, you are missing a great time! The spectator turnout is fabulous. So, when you come to the scales with a fish, you think may be the winner, you have a live audience to show off in front of. If you have ever fished a tournament and weighed a fish, you know that pride and ego are major parts of the fun. Well, that's about all for now. If you would like more information about fishing tournaments contact Master Baiter's Sportfishing & Tackle.
