FISHING REPORT
| "Fishing
Frenzy" #60 Weekly Fishing Report | | by
John Gabruk January 19, 2003. |
Fishing continues to be outrageous here in Puerto Vallarta. The hardest decision
or part of planning your trip is figuring out what you want to catch. That will
determine where you want to go. If Dorado is what you want
and you want a lot of them, you may choose to book a Punta Mita trip just outside
of the bay. Dorado can also be caught at Corbetania at will, and this should continue
throughout the month. Sailfish are also available in Punta Mita although trolling
dead lisas will bring both Sails and Dorado up, but primarily Dorado right now.
Just a bit further out in the El Moro area, you move
into the Sailfish territory, many Sails have been nailed this week. "El Amo"
allotted for 11 Sailfish and lost a big blue Marlin after a two-hour fight. It
jumped and came unbuttoned. Oh well, Trini, Greenpeace will be sending you a big
"I'm a friend to the fishes" patch for the front of your overalls soon
Dorado will also be in this area along with smaller Tuna. Moving out farther,
we start getting into the big stuff. Giant Yellowfin Tuna are at Corbetania along
with "some" Black Marlin, but call it a Tuna trip because that's the
main target outside of the bay now. Everything can be caught in this area, Sails,
Dorado, Wahoo, Marlin, but the Tuna is king. Yesterday, a dead whale was found
just outside of Corbetania and the Dorado were everywhere! Fifteen boats covered
the whale carcass and other than the smell, it couldn't have been better! Now
to the automated teller machine, The Bank (or El Banco as we call it in Vallarta),
49 miles out of Marina Vallarta
. The giants are wide open if you use fluoro
carbon leaders, if you use regular leaders, then sit and wait for a giant Yellowfin
with bad eyes, even Bill can catch those
"Tonya
Too" went to the Bank two days ago and nailed the giants. Stan Gabruk, the
brother-in-law of Tonya Gabruk, owner of Master Baiter's Sportfishing & Tackle,
had his first experience with big fish. He boated a 230-lb. Yellowfin Tuna in
an amazing amount of time. One hour and
forever later, we thought he would
never get this fish in. This adolescent kicked the "old man with a clipboard"'s
butt. He was a good sport about it and got another 160-pounder after he semi-recovered.
This week a long-range fishing boat called "Red Rooster" was fishing
the banks of Puerto Vallarta and boated numerous large Tuna. The report was several
over 300 pounds. I think they could have caught a lot more if it wasn't for local
charter boats running over their lines. It was a mad house at Master Baiter's
Marina Vallarta Tackle store, numerous local crews were very upset at the long-range
boats coming to Vallarta. They repeatedly asked us why these boats were coming
in for "their" fish, they said "they don't even stop to spend any
money in our town but they take our town's fish!" The Captains got together
and said "they would run over all lines coming into "their house". The
bank is the best bet for big fish now. Yes, it does cost more and you need a fast
boat so you don't spend the day on a whale watching or dolphin watching tour.
Which by the way is part of the fishing scene at this time of year. Some boats
get there in 2 hours and others take 4 hours. It's important to ask how long it
takes to get where you want to go when chartering a boat. Also, if you are going
after Tuna, you definitely want to rent a charter boat with Tuna tubes. Stop by
Master Baiter's Sportfishing & Tackle in Marina Vallarta, 3 doors from the
lighthouse when facing the water (the outside is painted with fish). We are the
ONLY fishing charter that is so confident, we'll put our money where our mouth
is
MONEY BACK GUARANTEED CATCH on "Tonya Too" and "High Maintenance"
(company-owned boats only). We also have every boat in Puerto Vallarta available
for charters, we'll give you an accurate description of the boat and be sure it's
what you want. If you rent from someone with 1 boat, you get 1 boat to choose
from. Master Baiter's Sportfishing can hook you up with
any charter boat, our goal is to get you on a fishing trip for what you want to
catch and to be sure the crew and equipment is right for you. If there is a charter
boat that hasn't changed its line for months, then we won't rent it for a big
fish charter. If there is black smoke, you will be told. There are so many things
you need to know when booking a charter
Come talk to Tonya, Monday to Friday
10:00 am to 6:00 pm and Saturday from 10:00 am to 3:00 pm. She'll send you on
a trip of a lifetime! We can also freeze your fish to take home, we're the only
ones to offer this service in town . Did you know you can take back 70-lbs frozen
per person to USA or Canada in a regular cooler with no ice & no dry ice?
Just check it on the plane, just like a suitcase. Until next week, Best Fishes! www.mbsportfishing.com mbsportfishing@pvnet.com.mx
