Frenzy" #62 Weekly Fishing Report | | by

Puerto
Vallarta is rapidly becoming the new HOT SPOT of the mainland Mexican coast. Tonya
Gabruk of Master Baiter's Sportfishing & Tackle says she is being bombarded
with phone calls and e-mails requesting confirmation of the recent fish counts
and reports of the long range tuna sportfishing boats based in San Diego, California.
A virtually unknown or well kept secret spot for giant yellowfin tuna and huge
black marlin available in incredible numbers now, doesn't seem to be such a secret
anymore. Puerto Vallarta's time has come and along with it tuna fisherman from
around the world looking for the elusive 400 lb plus tuna! When
Tonya was asked how she feels about the San Diego based long range fishing boats
fishing the Puerto Vallarta hot spots along with the general attitude of the local
charter boats. She replied, "Many local Captains have come to voice their
opinions on the recent arrival of many USA based long range fishers here in P.V.,
mostly negative. This along with my own personal concerns has had me contemplating
the positive vs. the negative aspects of the recent situation. Discussing this
with my husband John along with being in contact with the long range Captains
and Owners and local Captains, my conclusion is that the long range boats fishing
our waters along with the publicity and advertising done by them can only be a
BENEFIT to P.V.'s economy with limited effect to local boats with minimal inconvenience
to our local fleet. The long ranger's will take only a small amount of fish (numerous
releases reported) from our area and even though they aren't entering the port
of PV. I am receiving such a large amount of people requesting one, two or three
day bookings of my boats and other's boats (whom we broker) that indirectly, the
economy will feel the positive effects." The LONG RANGE BOATS ARE NOT THE
PROBLEM or even the main concern. It's the tuna netting boats (perseiners) that
rape the waters of PV illegally that needs to be addressed and stopped. In one
netting, they will take more tuna than the local or long range boats will take
in a whole season. I am working with various agencies local & federal to put
a stop to this and I'm dedicated to seeing it put to seeing it put to an end.
So, to the long ranger's, welcome, come on down and if long range trips aren't
feasible or private charter boats better fit your budget, style of fishing or
time constraints, contact us at Master Baiter's Sportfishing & Tackle and
we'll get you on the giants. Maybe, you'll get the first 400 lb Yellowfin tuna
and we'll celebrate together. Don't forget, because of insurance reasons the long
ranger's can't come to PV during our best season for the giants, summer! Now,
lets talk fishing. Things continue to be good, the most predominate fish being
caught is big dorado's and they are everywhere. A relatively inexpensive El Morro
charter will produce as many dorado as you care to catch. Trolling dead bait has
proven to be the best way to bring the dorado's up this week. In this area, this
week, over 60 dorado averaging 36 to 65 pounds have been boated by our local fleets
based in Marina Vallarta. Numerous sailfish strikes and hook-ups have been reported
in the same area with 14 sails being released (way to go guys!). The "Tonya
Too" boat had a great week accounting for 6 sails and 22 of the dorado. Fishing
this area is a short run and inexpensive and is perfect for first timers or people
with children or family members who don't want to make the long run to the outside
fishing grounds. Moving outside of the bay, marlin are still in the area, although
normally gone by this time of the year, with the water staying warm, the marlin
have stuck around. Two black marlin were released at Corbetania (36 miles out
of Marina Vallarta) and five other strikes were reported but never made it to
leeder. Corbetania
has also had a great week for yellowfin tuna. I can't give an exact number on
the tuna because there were so many and when the Captains were asked how many
tuna they caught, the answer was "a lot" but they only wanted to talk
about the giants. Six tuna over 200 pounds were caught at Corbetania, 2 over 250
which is also not common for this time of year. I guess El Nino is working for
us this year in fishing. Now to The Bank (49 miles out of Marina Vallarta), my
favorite spot. This week started out great, with 250 pound plus tuna's making
it to the docks the Friday, Saturday, Sunday & Monday along with an untold
amount of 80 to 150's. Things looked like they were going to continue to be wide
open at The Bank for tuna, at least throughout the week, but on Tuesday it shut
off like a light! Two boats going to the bank, expecting to catch a fish of a
lifetime were disappointed upon arrival, when no tuna signs were present, no skipjack
in the water, no birds in the air and slightly off color water. The Captains of
El Amo & Magnifico knew without some basic signs that there was little or
no chance of catching tuna in this area that day and after trolling bait for a
short period of time, made the call to leave the Bank in search for blue water,
birds, dolphins or other signs that would mean fish were in the area. And what
a great call it was! Moving inside about 10 miles off The Bank they saw a big
bull dorado jumping and headed toward it. When they got to the spot, they discovered
an illegal longline that had hooked a dorado - free lunch! They took the dorado
& kept going. This is not an uncommon practice
of the sportfishing fleets in PV due to the effect of the illegal longlines on
daily fish counts. Then they dropped baits and trolled along the longlines and
in that general area. Twelve dorado later, they called it a day and headed home.
Good call Captains! Most fishing done in Puerto Vallarta is done while trolling,
live bait, dead bait or lures. Some people are confused and don't understand why
different baits are trolled at different speeds. Our local charter boat Captains
are experts and know what speed will produce the most strikes and while on a charter
boat if you have any questions as to why they may be doing something different
then you know, just ask and they will be happy to explain. Also, remember this,
they are here to serve and if you have an idea they will be more than happy to
try it. Fishing in PV is like going to Burger King, you can have it your way,
just ask. So, come on down to the "Sea of Giants", otherwise known as
Puerto Vallarta. www.mbsportfishing.com mbsportfishing@pvnet.com.mx
