FISHING REPORT

"Fishing Frenzy"
#64 Weekly Fishing Report

by John Gabruk
February 16, 2003.

The weather and water continue to be unseasonably warm here in Puerto Vallarta. That is great news for anyone wanting to do some quality deep-sea fishing. Normally, at this time of year, the “Big Stuff”, Giant Yellowfin Tuna and Black Marlin have moved south for the winter. Not so this year. Last week, there were no reports of Marlin, strikes or caught. Not the case this week! That was partially due to the limited amount of boats that fished “The Bank” or “El Banco”. With the return of the “High Maintenance” to active duty, the Bank is now being fished again and Captain Steve, crew & ecstatic anglers were able to get 4 Black Marlin to leader this past week. Two on lures and two on live skipjack. Capt. Steve reported 3 additional strikes on lures but they just didn’t stick. The largest Black was an estimated 500 lbs. I don’t know how long the Marlin are going to stay around, they are usually gone by this time. So, if it’s Marlin you want, get out there now!

Tuna are all over the Bank and in all sizes. Like the Marlin, they have stayed late this year and not just footballs, Giant Yellowfin can be seen jumping in incredible numbers. Nothing will get your heart racing like seeing 300 pounders flying through the air. 10 to 50 lb tuna can be caught at will on “Hoochies” eh, two to five inch squid bait catcher type lures or small “Wild’s” but, the way to get bit by the big boys is to use live bait. Not Goggle eyes, small Tuna up to 7 lbs and Skipjack are producing ALL the giant strikes this week and only with fluoro carbon leaders. It still amazes me that people, after reading my weekly report on how to ensure Giant Yellowfin Tuna strikes with fluoro carbon leaders would go out without them. If you don’t have them, check with the boat Captain to see if they are provided. If not, buy two. You can get them at Master Baiter’s Sportfishing & Tackle in Marina Vallarta (3 doors from the lighthouse, when facing the water), it’s money well spent. I personally use fluoro carbon exclusively! Don’t get cheap, get hooked up! Dorado (mahi-mahi) are everywhere outside of the bay. So, put at least one goggle eye while trolling, the bigger bait’s for Dorado & Sailfish.

Corbetania is also good, no Marlin reported but a bunch of Tuna and Dorado. So, if your trip is more in line with your budget, you will be happy fishing that area. The Dorado continue to be eating just about anything and they are big anywhere outside of the bay. 30 to 40 lb Dorado are normal with the occasional 50 lb plus fish this week.

Stop by Master Baiter’s Sportfishing & Tackle, “Where fishing is catching” located 3 doors from the lighthouse in MARINA VALLARTA (when facing the water) and see Tonya or John. They will direct you to the fishing boat; crew, grounds & equipment for what you want to catch and our company owned boats have a GUARANTEED CATCH. Open Monday to Friday 10:00am to 6:00pm & Saturday 10:00 am to 3:00 pm or www.mbsportfishing.com or (from USA/CANADA 011-52-322 +) 20-90498 or 99.
